Richard Harris sits and stares at the envelope in front of him before finding Dwight’s eyes. He gives him a questioning look.
“Rich, one of us has to go, and it sure as hell won’t be Quinn.”
“Dwight, are you sure about this?” I ask.
He squeezes my hand that he’s still holding onto. “Never been surer of anything. Remember what I said? I won’t ever let this go. You mean more to me than any job.”
My eyes well with tears and I give him a teary smile.
“I’ll be sorry to see you go, Dwight,” Harris says. “But I understand, and I wish you well in the future, both of you.”
Dwight is required to work a week's notice, so it’s not a final goodbye between him and Harris, just a simple handshake between friends and colleagues. Once we’re out of the office, Dwight and I make our way through campus together before splitting off to our classes, and once they’re over, I head to work.
Although I’m only working a short shift tonight, it passes by painfully slow, and all I want to do is be with Dwight, in his arms tucked up in bed.
Fifteen minutes before my shift is due to end, the front door swings open and in steps Dwight, looking as gorgeous as ever, dressed in a grey Henley, faded blue jeans with a brown leather jacket over the top, his long hair dishevelled, his short beard styled perfectly as always.
God, he’s so sexy.
My heart spikes as he nears me, as when he does, I’m swept into his arms, his mouth claiming mine. Once our lips connect I forget that we’re in the middle of a restaurant in front of a load of people. I don’t even care, all that matters is us.
When he releases me, I glance around us self-consciously, my cheeks heating. He pulls me into another kiss, this time with my feet firmly on the ground.
“Christ, it feels good to kiss you in a restaurant and not give a fuck who sees,” he says, his eyes warm and sparkling with lust and love.
Once my shift is over, he leads me out and before I get the chance to climb into his car, I’m spun around and backed against the cool metal, his arms caging me in as he descents on my mouth, devouring my lips like it’s the last time he’ll ever kiss me.
The kiss is deep and passionate as we pour every ounce of love we have into it. I want it to last forever.
When he finally breaks the kiss, he rests his head against mine. “I want to show you something.”
He doesn’t tell me anything more as we drive in the opposite direct of my apartment. The drive is only about ten minutes and we pull up to the curb of a beautiful neighbourhood, rows of the most gorgeous houses lining either side of the street. He switches off the engine and gets out before rounding the car to open the door for me.
Always the gentleman.
“What do you think?” he asks.
“What do I think about what?”
“The neighbourhood, the house...”
I give the house in front of us the once over. It sure is beautiful. Two-storeys with a built-in garage, the front lawn lined with fresh flowers around the edge.
“It’s great, but what are we doing here?”
“Can you see us living in a place like this?”
I let my imagination take over, picturing what our lives might look like someday. As I stare at the house, I see us standing in the porch, kissing Dwight goodbye as he heads off to work before following him out myself.
I smile at the image in my mind and look up at Dwight. “Yeah, I can.”
He pulls something out of his jacket pocket and tosses it to me, I catch it. Keys. They jangle as they meet my hands. “Good, because if you couldn’t it’s too late now anyway.”
What?
“What are you talking about?”
“It’s ours. I bought it for us.”
