"What is it you want then?"

"Can we talk?"

"I think you said everything there is to say at the divorce hearing," Winter said. "If my children are fine, then what else do you want with me?"

"I hate you hating me."

"Well, I hate that you left me because Iturned our son gay."

“Winter, I was wrong. I need—”

“I don’t care whatyou need, William. It’s always about you, isn’t it? Never any regard for anyone else.”

“You used to care.”

“And youused tobe a faithful husband.”

She hung up the phone.

It started to ring again.

She rejected the call.

And her hands trembled. Every part of him wanted to go through that phone and rip that jerk’s head off.

What the fuck was that about?

Winter glanced at him, a forced smile on her face. "Sorry. My ex-husband wanted to chat." She sat down on the couch. Rather she kind of slumped into it.

Weariness looked like it tried to eat away at her.

He sat down with her. "Does he do that often?" he asked as he put his arm around her.

She leaned into him. "Not since the divorce."

Shaun raised his eyebrow. "Your husband left you because you turned his son gay?"

"That was his claim."

"Doesn't he know that's not how that works?"

"One would think a lawyer would know better."

"Guess not."

"Nope. Guess not."

He stroked her dark hair. "Sorry, he's a dick head."

"Well, I wasn't the smartest girl when I married him."

"And now?"

"Now, I don't know. Maybe a little smarter."

"I'd say so."

"Why?"
