“Hey baby. I need you to help me out. Zelle a few thousand and I will get it back to you.”

“Really? That’s the only reason you calling my phone? I’m fine and so is the baby. Thanks for asking.” I could tell she was about to piss me off, but I needed her, so I had to keep my attitude in check.

“You know that’s not it. I just need to handle something and then I’ll be over there to love on you.” Normally, she would be excited, but I didn’t hear that at all this time.

“Garrett, I’m not in the mood.” Tired of kissing her ass, I snapped.

“You trying to play me too, bitch? What the fuck are you going to do without me? You’re a nothing ass lowlife, and without me, your baby will be one as well. Think about that the next time you try to act unexcited about me calling you.”

“I hope you get everything you deserve. Don’t come anywhere near me or my child. When it’s born, I’m taking your ass to child support and get whatever money you have left.” Hanging up the phone, I jumped in my car and drove off. My thoughts were racing and all over the place. Feeling the wetness against my cheek, I realized I was crying. How could I go from having it all one day, to having nothing the next? I swerved in and out of traffic as I thought about it all.

I had nothing else to live for and I wasn’t about to fight it. Reaching over to the passenger seat, I grabbed the bottle of scotch I’ve been drinking on all day and took a deep swig. Raising the bottle towards the sky, I tipped it to God. He had really fucked me over. Turning the car, I got on the E-way. I pushed the accelerator until it was over a hundred on the dash.Making sure I was at a fatal speed; I jerked the wheel and allowed my car to go flying into the wall. By the time I thought this might be a mistake, it was too late.

You always have the words that never let me down. Always make me laugh somehow. You tell me don’t worry when I’ve done wrong. It’s something that I’ll never know how you can love someone so broken. So right. Cause all I ever wanted was a little bit of paradise.

29-DEVIN “THE MERCENARY” MERCER

“Boy sit down. You making me nervous, hell!” My OG was going off on me, but I could barely function. I had no idea why though because this wasn’t my first interaction with Mila. After the funeral, I’ve been on the phone with them for weeks and I’ve came to see them a couple of times in between. However, this was the first time we were actually going to be together for days. The playoffs were about to start, and I wouldn’t have much time for anything once they did. So, I wanted some time with her.

“Twin, did you read the articles like I told you?” I could hear her smacking her lips and I couldn’t do shit but laugh.

“Boy, I told you I did, but I’m a mother. I don’t need all that shit to tell me how to be with my grandchild.”

“I just don’t want yall saying the wrong thing. Landon-…”

“Nigga, I read it. I got the stuff you asked me to get her. I’m going to be on my best behavior. Anything else?” Hearing my phone ding a smile spread across my face.

“They’re here.” I turned to run out the room and ran into the door hard as fuck.

“This simple mufucka. Lord, help him.” Landon fell out laughing at moms, but I gathered myself and kept going. When I got to the door, I fixed my shirt before opening it.

“Hey, Mila. How was your flight, baby girl?”

“Long! It was a long line to get to the plane. A long line on the plane. Ooh, but mommy got me snacks at the airport and I got a new toy. Wanna see?” Smiling, I bent down and let her show me the toy.

“It’s perfect, just like you. Are you ready to meet your grandma?”

“Do you think she’s going to like me?”

“I’m going to love you. What’s taking yall so long to bring me my baby.” My OG was standing there with her walker, but her hand was on her hip.

“You’re old.” Trying not to laugh out loud, I begged my OG with my eyes.

“Ain’t nothing old about GG. Come here girl and give me a hug with your cute self.” Mila ran over and wrapped her arms around her.

“Mommy said I have a berry mark like you. Do yours look like mine or is it old and wrinkly?”

“It might have a hair or two, but it’s still sitting pretty. Come on, let me take you to meet your brother Jr.” I shook my head as I turned towards Brianna. My mother calling Landon my son always made me feel a way that I tried to ignore.

“You gone stand out there or are you going to come inside?” She looked nervous, but I had no idea why. Brianna had already met them.

“Maybe I should go to the hotel, and you bring her back later.” She was scared they were going to light into her ass for keeping Mila from me.

“Bring yo scary ass on.” Grabbing her by the hand, I pulled her inside. I could have let it go, but it felt good, so I kept holding it as we walked in the front with the others. “I know the situation ended crazy, but I wanted to tell you sorry for your loss.”

“I’m fine.” The news had spread that Garrett died in a car accident that appeared to be a suicide, and while I didn’t give a fuck about that nigga, and wanted to put hands on him, she was married to him.
