“Gross, Cash. That’s my sister,” Noah complains.
“You guys.” Piper pulls Cash’s hand from her mouth and turns back to me. “Ignore them, Nick. I know you don’t want someone that is all about hockey. You want someone more balanced.”
“I do.”
The less someone knows about hockey, the better. It’s always hard to know if someone wants me for me, or if they want me for my position on the team.
Hockey might be a big part of my life, but it isn’t my whole life. I know this will end for me one day. I take a beating everygame. Pucks flying at me, knees creaking more and more every time I move.
If I find someone who doesn’t follow the game, I have a better chance of them not being a puck bunny.
No matter where we go, women always seem to find us after the game. I hate being an object to them. They could trade out any player and it wouldn’t matter to them. They’re a small minority, but it still rubs me the wrong way.
I want someone who wants me for me. Who is going to respect me. Who will look past the glove and stick and see me for me.
Just like I’ll see them for who they really are.
“I’ll send you her number,” Piper tells me. “You’ll like her. I promise.”
“To Nicky and dating!” Angie raises her glass and everyone toasts to that, but I only groan.
Do I want this? Yes. Do I want all of these guys in my business every step of the way with it? Maybe. Probably not. No.
But if it means I can find what they have, then I guess I’ll have to suck it up.
Because goalies and general managers aren’t meant to be together.
