“Really, go. It’s okay.”
“I could tell him to fuck off.”
“I heard that,” Mav said flatly.
She perched herself on my chest and cupped my cheek. “Go, Axe. They need you.”
“Doyouneed me?”
She stroked her finger along my cheek. “Would that matter?”
“It matters to me.”
Knock, knock, knock, knock.“Come on, Axe, we’ve got a lot to get going around here.”
I groaned as I lifted myself upright, still holding her against me. “You stay put, okay? Doc’s orders. Don’t go anywhere without someone at your side, even if it’s just around the clubhouse, and don’t strain yourself in any way. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
“You keep yourself safe, too, okay?”
Even though I hated it, even though I wanted to stay there against her for all eternity, I forced myself to lay her back down. I placed a gentle kiss on her forehead and watched that angelic smile creep across her face before I reached down for the sheet and pulled it up over her exposed body. God, what I wouldn’t have given for five more minutes with her luxurious playground.
But Mav was right. We had a shit ton of work to get done.
“Promise me,” Brielle said as I stood from the bed.
I scooped up my clothes and pulled them back onto my body. “No promises.”
“Axton.”
I grinned. “That worried, huh?”
“Can you blame me?”
I finished dressing myself before I slipped into my leather jacket. She had a point, and I sure as hell wasn’t gonna leave her empty-handed.
Not after everything she had been through with us.
“I promise to do whatever I can to keep you safe,” I said, staring her down. “But I can’t promise that both you and I will be all right, because if your safety means my—”
Worry flooded her eyes as she held up her hand, stopping my sentence in its tracks. “Just come back, okay?”
I reached for the doorknob. “I’ll do my best.”
“Wait, before you go,” Brielle said quickly.
I spun around. “What’s up?”
She held the sheet up, covering her pristine body from me and pointed to the foot of the bed. “If you haven’t torn my clothes to shreds, can you hand them to me?”
I smirked. “And if I have?”
“Then, you might want to find some more clothes for me to wear.”
I chuckled as I walked to the foot of the bed. I scooped up the oversized clothes, happy that she had found them. There wasn’t much for her to wear around here in terms of clothes that fit her, but we were happy to part with some of the things we didn’t wear often so that she could have something to cover herself.
I tossed the clothes back to her, watching as she caught them in her hands.
Good, her dexterity hadn’t been impacted by her injuries.
