I didn’t override his sentiment because that was exactly what we needed. Plan B, C, D, and even E.

We’d need every single contingency to get ourselves and Julia out of the situation alive.

“And the man was too stunned to speak,” Bullet said.

The man tossed Julia at Bullet’s feet and I watched helplessly as he yanked her up by her hair.

“Ah!” she cried out.

“Shut up, or I’ll kill you where you stand right now,” Bullet growled.

I quickly reached for the gun on my hip and pulled it out. “Let her go.”

Every single one of his men pulled out their weapons and turned them on me, outnumbering me four to one. I watched as Bullet stuck his tongue out, sliding it along Julia’s cheek as a soft whimper fell from her lips. That was when I saw it, too. Right beneath the moonlight that had finally peeked out for us.

She was silently crying.

And Bullet was licking the tears off her face.

“Let her go!” I bellowed.

He smacked his lips together. “I love the taste of fear in someone’s tears.”

“How did you find her?” I glowered.

“I’m so sorry,” Julia said breathlessly.

“Tell me how you found her!” I roared.

My voice echoed over the dock, rolling to and from my ears multiple times as Bullet’s smile grew.

“Did you really think you’d be able to pull the wool over my eyes?” he asked. “I mean, tailing you guys to the house was easier than ever. But watching her run for the hills? Running straight for our van? Flagging it down, even? I’ve never seen a woman so eager to be in my good graces.”

“I’d rather die than be anything to you,” Julia spat. “And had I known it was you in that van? I would’ve killed you the second you stopped.”

He leaned forward and sniffed her hair. “I love it when they have sass, don’t you? Because I have a feeling that’s why you put her out there. Am I right, Fangs? Because you don’t want her in the line of fire? Because you want to keep banging her for a little bit longer?”

“Fangs, if you don’t do something, I will,” Angel glowered.

So, I holstered my weapon and slid my hands into the air.

“It’s always so easy when women are involved,” Bullet said.

“Here’s how this is going to go down,” I said as I kept my hands in the air.

Before I could distract him long enough with my talking, though, Julia’s eyes dropped to Bullet’s hip. She moved without a second thought, pulling the gun out of his holster right there on his hip. She moved like water, ebbing and flowing between the slits and the cracks of the men as panic rushed over their faces. And before Bullet could even open his mouth to bark out orders, she had the gun cocked.

Before she pointed it at his head.

JULIA

My vision tunneled, and all I saw was that man’s face. The Devil Himself was who Bullet had become. And as I stood there with a cocked gun staring down his temple, I knew all I had to do was pull that trigger. One flick of my finger, and he’d be gone forever.

So, why hadn’t I already done it?

“Julia, stop,” Fangs said calmly.
