“Ford can extend our stay another night,” Jacobs tells her immediately.
Her shoulders immediately relax, as if a weight has been lifted off of them.
“I do. But I don't have any clothes or my books for tomorrow. I’d have to go home to get them and he could be there.”
“Then I’ll go. Message your mom. Tell her you’re staying another night with your friends and that I’m stopping by to get your bookbag, since I’m heading past there anyway, and you need to work on an assignment. While I’m there, I’ll get you some clothes.” I tell her.
“Okay. I love you guys. But I don’t know about Matthew yet. It’s still too much to process and my brain is fried. I just want to spend another night with the two of you.” She stands, heading to the dresser where her phone is plugged in, and sits on the edge of the bed.
“If he hurts her, I’m going to fuck his world up,” Jacob leans in and whispers in a growl.
“I’ll be right beside you if he does,” I add.
Her mother was okay with Kitty staying with her friend another night and for me to get her bag. She even told her it was okay to tell me where the spare key was hidden, in case no one was home.Got to love when a parent trusts you!
The only downfall is Jacob rates a little higher on the scale with her parents, but I’ll let him have that since he’s known her longer.
I didn’t have to look for the spare since Kitty gave me her key, but I still plan to put on a good show since I know they have cameras if no one’s home. When I get there, I see Matthew’s car in the driveway.
Good! We need to have a little chat.
Lifting my hand, I knock on the door and then ring the bell. Yep, I’m being that annoying prick.
Footsteps sound from the other side, getting louder the closer they get. A moment later, the door opens, and none other than Matthew is standing on the other side, looking like pure shit. His hair is tousled, bags under his eyes, and his clothes disheveled.
“Is she okay?” He steps past me onto the porch and looks around before turning back to me. “Where is she?”
I can’t help but raise my hand, covering my mouth as I laugh. The asshole prick has it bad for soon-to-be little sis.
“She’s fine, but not coming home. I’m here to get her books and stuff, and her mom already knows,” I interject, attempting to put him out of a little of his misery.
“Is she pissed at me?” he asks, his voice full of defeat as he steps back into the house, with me close behind him.
Shutting the door, he drags himself into the living room, flopping down on the couch.
“Does she hate me? I want to explain everything, but she’s not answering my messages.”
“I don’t think she hates you. Dylan’s just very torn right now. Both with what happened and how she feels. She’s struggling with the idea that you’re going to be her stepbrother and how people will look at that.”
“I’m conflicted as well, in more ways than one. I’ve been fighting this desire to be with her. Honestly, I thought she was like all the girls I knew from my time playing lacrosse, all trying to land a player, to secure their future. But then when I began scouting three players on your team, well, the three of you, I couldn’t understand the feelings I was having for Murphy. I didn’t know that was even Dylan’s last name. Her mother must be going by her maiden name.”
I know this is going to be more than a quick conversation, so I sit down in the chair across from him. Letting out a sigh, I truly take in what he just said.
“You thought you had feelings for another guy. And you’ve never had that before.”
“Bingo. When she took off her helmet, I was so excited. She wasn’t at all what I thought she was. I treated her like shit because I thought she was a stick chaser. The girl I’ve been yearning for is not only beautiful but plays the sport I love. I couldn’t hold it in any longer and kissed her.”
“Look, Matthew, give her time. She needs it to process everything and rushing her isn’t going to help. Let her come to you. I’ll talk to her.”
He whips his head over to me, eyebrow raised in confusion.
“You’re her boyfriend, right? Why are you even talking to me? You should be kicking my ass for kissing her.”
I give him a smirk before standing. My girl is waiting for me, and I need to get what she needs from her room. I step around the couch, not saying a word until I get to the living room entryway.
“Because I love her. And I’ll do anything to make her happy, including sharing her. Even with you. But if you hurt her, I’ll make your life hell.” I don’t turn to face him, nor do I say anything else. I head up the stairs and straight to Dylan’s room. I’ve said all I needed to say.
