“Yes, it would.”

This is more than he’s ever told me about his plans and I want to keep him talking. On the whole, this isn’t good news.It means we’re not at the point where he can solidify his hold over the New York Mob.Which means I won’t get my army to take back to LA soon like I’d hoped.

“I’m sure Codelli will surrender soon,” I say.“Or flee the country. He has no hope of getting back what you took from him.”

Ferro grins.Or sneers. Not sure which.“He won’t leave without his daughters.I’m sure he’ll fight to get them back.I thought you were supposed to be the one teaching me about women and their usefulness.”

Definitely a sneer.But I deserve that.

“So why not dangle them to get him to surrender?”

This time he actually scoffs.“I’m not giving my wife back. And you? You’re just gonna give up that sweet blonde peach of yours?I don’t see you doing that. You got it bad for her, anyone can see that.”

I was not aware thatanyone could see thatand I’m sure that must be written plainly on my face right now, because Ferro chortles.

“Don’t look so frightened, I’m not going to make you give her up,” he says and chuckles again.“You and I, we’re a lot alike. We’ve both lost everything to pompous bastards like Codelli. So I’ll still help you out with an army as soon as I can, you don’t have to worry about that either.”

“I wasn’t worried,” I say.“I know you’re a man of your word.”

But I was worried. And he must’ve read that off my face too.I used to be good at keeping my game face on.I don’t know when that ability left me.Maybe about the same time I fell for Gianna.

“I got it,” the Russian yells.“I know where the phone is.”

Ferro rushes back into the room, smoke and ash from his cigar trailing behind him.I don’t think I’ve ever seen him move so fast.Outside of while he was killing someone, that is.

The Russian tells us the address while typing it into a maps app.“It’s a residential house of some sort.”

The screen of his laptop is normal now, showing us the house on the map.Looks about as well fortified as Ferro’s mansion here, although a lot more modern. And there’s nothing but empty fields all around it.Impossible to sneak up on, in other words.

“We’re going there now,” Ferro announces.“Where’s my tire iron?”

I’ve never heard him sound this excited.Lorenzo tells him it’s in the garage, and Ferro grins widely.

“Get ready, you’re coming too,” he tells me.

“I’m ready.”

I’m not sure I’ve ever been less ready to do something. But maybe we’ll just find an empty house at that address.Or a house we can’t get into. But neither of those things will stop Ferro for long.I know that much about him now.

That urge to run from this house and keep running is back. But I’m never gonna do that now.Not with Goldie locked up here. And her whole future and the future of her family resting on my shoulders.

This must be my curse acting up, driving me towards ruin at breakneck speed now.Ruin in life, ruin in love, ruin in everything that matters. And me absolutely powerless to stop it.

Chapter30

GIANNA

He lockedme back up as soon as we returned to the mansion.Did I expect anything different? No.Did I hope for it?Maybe.

I don’t want to be alone with my thoughts.Too often they turn sweet for him.Too often they drift back to last night and the insane pleasure he put me through.Too often I want more of it.Crave it.And find myself staring at the door, listening for his footsteps outside, my entire body pulsing in anticipation of his arrival. His kisses. His touch. The sunlight and warmth he brings.

It’s been hours.I’ve tried reading the books he brought me but only ended up reading the words and not understanding the meaning of the sentences they formed.Even the words eventually turned into just black squiggly lines on the yellowed pages.

It doesn’t help that I still feel his cock inside me if I chose to think about it.It doesn’t help that I crave his company. And it doesn’t help knowing that he’s probably right… this is it for me.I don’t have anywhere else to go.

I was hoping he’d come and take me out again tonight.Or come and stay in with me.

But it’s dark outside now and the house is quiet, especially the hallway beyond my door.
