“You heard the lady,” Mimi said. “Scram. Better luck next time.”

My mouth dropped as Mimi shut the door in Roger’s face.

“I thought you liked him?” I said. “You picked him out for me!”

“We never said we likedanyof these guys we chose for you,” Mimi said.

“That’s right,” Gilda added. “We simply said they would appeal to you for certain reasons. We don’t have to like them because we ain’t dating them.”

I growled. “I need wine!”

Jacob laughed. “Coming right up.”

We all ambled into the kitchen, and I was a little irked to see they’d already opened one bottle and were starting on their second.

“How was your night?” I asked Jacob. “Did they set you up?”

Gilda grinned. “As a matter of fact, we now know where to start.”

That information didn’t hurt as much as it did an hour ago. If the girls chose Jacob’s dates like they chose mine, I had nothing to worry about.

Not that I was worried about him dating and liking someone else.

Not too much, anyway.

Mom and the girls stayed for about half an hour, and we all had a good time laughing and drinking wine. Jacob was the first to stand and beg off.

“Don’t forget to take a heating pad to bed with you tonight if you need it,” he cautioned. “Tomorrow you may be hurting even worse.”

Mimi snickered, and I scowled. “Because of my sore muscles from the ballgame!”

“We better be going, too,” Mom cut in before Mimi could open her mouth again.

“Since you’re both here,” Mimi said, “Monica, your next date will be tomorrow night, and before you interrupt me and give me the excuse you have to work, it’s already taken care of.” She turned to Jacob. “On the ride home tonight, I texted your first date, and it will be Thursday night. You will get details that afternoon as to who and where.”

Before Jacob or I could interject with questions, the women got up and walked out the door.

Chapter 9

“How are you supposed to have a date tonight if you’re working?” Kieran asked.

I set a cup of coffee on the table in front of her and another one in front of Jacob. He’d just gotten off work when he spotted Kieran and me next to the pool sitting and drinking coffee. After a quick shower, he came out and sat with us.

“I have no idea,” I said. “All I know is that his name is Jonathan and he’s a chef from Portland.” I looked at Jacob. “What about you? Did Mimi or anyone text you about your date tomorrow night?”

Kieran’s mouth dropped open. “Wait. The old ladies are setting you up, too?”

He smiled and took a sip of his coffee. “Looks that way.”

Kieran threw up her hands. “What about me? MaybeI’dlike a man?”

I laughed. “Trust me, you don’t want this.”

I looked at my cell phone. It was almost five. I’d have to leave in an hour to get to This and That so I could prepare for the night’s meal.

Kieran turned to Jacob. “So, do you have any idea about your date tomorrow night? Name? What you’re doing?”

He smiled. “Not a clue. But if it’s anything like Monica’s date last night, I’m a little worried.”
