Me: Red and I are being followed.
My foot shook as I stared between the phone and the side mirror. “It’s broad daylight. Surely, they wouldn’t do anything stupid. Why don’t we just go back to the clubhouse?”
“We will once we have them.”
“Wait, what?” My voice went up five octaves. “You’re keeping me in the car until you trap them? Like bait?”
“Not bait. They already targeted us. If we don’t do this now, it’ll just happen again.”
Unshed tears filled my eyes. “I don’t like this. I want to go back, Red.”
“Trust me, Kristie.”
“Fuck you,” I whispered. If I spoke, the frog in my throat would move and the tears would flood, so I could only whisper it. But I wished I could scream it.
Red drove a few more miles, then my heart skipped when I saw motorcycles flying up behind the sedan. At first, my body relaxed, thinking it was over, but when the back glass blew out, the tears I’d been fighting back fell freely with the shriek that escaped my throat.
Red pushed me forward. “Get down.”
My body shook as more shots fired, some from inside the car, some from behind us.Who the hell has a shoot-out in the middle of the day?
With trembling hands, I clutched my phone and sent another text to Rooster, hoping it wasn’t the last.
“Brace yourself, stopping fast,” Red said calmly before slamming on the brakes.
Tires screeched and the sound of the loud pipes from the motorcycles got closer. I was still tucked as low as I could, andnot being able to see was almost as scary as the sounds around me.
Who was shouting? What was happening?
“Stay here,” Red said before jumping out of the SUV.
“Wait, Red! No!” I shouted.
Unable to take it anymore, I leaned up and looked out the back opening where only small pieces of the glass dangled. There were two men in the sedan, but one was being dragged out, kicked, and hit by the riders behind us. Red had a gun pulled on the driver’s side.
A tow truck was pulling up and my mind reeled. They called a tow truck?
Once it positioned itself to hook up to the sedan, a man I recognized but couldn’t place jumped from the driver’s seat. He was with us, but he didn’t have his cut on. But I definitely had seen him around the clubhouse with it on.
Another man jumped from the other side of the tow truck and pulled the driver’s side door of the sedan open. Then, he jerked the driver out before slamming his head on the edge of the open car.
I watched, my mouth hanging wide open, as they zip-tied both men before tossing one into the trunk of the sedan and the other in the back.
Red said something to the tow truck driver as he loaded the sedan, then ran back to the SUV.
He jumped in, buckled his seatbelt, and said, “Now we can go to the clubhouse.”
Still trembling, I wiped my face and tried to steady my breathing. I was safe. But was Rooster?
Chapter 22
Rooster
There was a clean shirt in my saddlebag, so I changed after cleaning up. I didn’t know much, just that Sparrow and Red were ambushed after her interview. I tried to call her, but it kept going straight to voicemail.
Shadow called for help moving the two that were still alive, and I helped them clear the area. Hawk said once they talked to the two guys still kicking, they’d be headed back, but allowed me to hit the road first.
“Just don’t finish them off until I get back,” Hawk said before I left.
