“One of the reasons I left the fucking job. The Army has a group of them too. Most of them are pretty good guys. But there are those that will do whatever it takes to make a mission complete, even if it cost innocent lives.” Tiny mumbled softly, yet loud enough for everyone to hear.
Desiree leaned back in her seat. There was so much about the dark side of agencies that she’d learned in the army and didn’t like.
She’d dealt with them so much in the Green Berets, but then she felt it was a necessary side of evil they needed to maintain when it came to dealing with the evils of the world. Now, she wondered how much of it was used on their own people when she learned that Mutt was possibly a part of all of that.
“But even if that’s true, why would Mutt be coming after me? I never reported him or Daniels for any of the shit I’d overheard. Hell, even what I do know for fact, I’ve never reported them. Stephens is dead. I never told command they were the cause of that. So why come at me like they are?” Desire breathed deeply as she moved her head side to side trying to ease the stiffness there.
“Who knows why people do half the shit that they do, hellcat. If we knew, then we could eliminate so much war and death. We could actually have peace in this world.” Max rubbed her shoulder as he studied her.
Max knew she was getting frustrated. She hated being cooped up the way she had been.
Even with the state-of-the-art security that she now had, they still had roving patrols from the club and the others. No one wasletting anything to be chanced now that the property had been expanded.
Even with a high stone fence, it could still be scaled, and cameras could be tampered with. They still had back-up grids in case someone tried to cut the feed to the main line.
Max wasn’t leaving anything to chance where Desiree was concerned. She was going to be his wife, and he would rain down hell on anyone who would try to harm her.
“So, are we not going to talk about that ring that’s on Desiree’s ring finger?” Nightshade asked as she took a bite of eggs.
“What ring?” Teddy asked looking around the table in confusion before his eyes landed on Desiree’s finger.
“Oh my God. You’re engaged?” Andrea cheered, as her chair scrapped the floor for her to lean over and get a better look.
“Yeah. Although he didn’t ask, he just placed it on my finger and told me to pick a date.” Desiree looked toward Max and smiled.
Fuck her smile was heaven to him. He knew what he wanted where she was concerned.
Now he was just ready for her to choose a date so he could make her his officially. If he had his way, they would elope and just have a reception.
Chapter
Thirty-Two
Desiree hummed as she cleaned the dishes in the kitchen. She was home alone for a change, despite Nightshade doing a patrol and keeping an eye on the cameras.
Max was at base with his team doing some mandatory training while Jose and Tiny were at work. They had been called in for a hostage situation and ran like the gates of hell were upon them.
She’s already completed her custom order the other day and was waiting for the client to come in and pick it up in a couple of days’ time since he was out of the country on business at the moment. Same for Nightshade.
They had lunch earlier and watched some tv before she went to go and do some rounds. She nearly jumped out of her skin though when her phone rang.
“Hey, Iris. What’s up?”
“Looks like this Mutt character has been disavowed from the CIA for going off the rails. He’s been doing side wet work. We’re trying to find out who his new employer is. From what we could obtain of Daniels’s phone, Mutt is trying to get him to come to the dark side.”
“Think he’ll do it? Iris, he’s assigned to Max and Teddy’s team in Delta Force. You don’t think he would set them up for a failed mission, do you?”
“Nothing would surprise me in all honesty, Olly. You need to talk to Max about this. See what he thinks should happen. Does Daniels know you and Max are an item?” Iris asked, her voice going low.
Well damn, that wasn’t something she’d actually considered. She knew the day she showed up at Max’s office on base to deal with the detective that Daniels hadn’t been there that day.
Most of the guys had gone to lunch at that time. So, in all honesty, she didn’t know if it was known that she and Max were an item.
“I don’t know. I don’t know what Daniels knows about me and Max or that Teddy is my brother. I’ve never talked about my family on the teams. Hell, Bradley didn’t even know I had brothers. I never introduced him to them or to Tiny. They probably think I’m an only child unless they’ve done their homework on me.” Desiree admitted to Iris.
Desiree’s heart rate started to spike at the thought of Max and Teddy in danger with Daniels. But then again, she had to wonder why Daniels would even have it out for her.
She’d never done anything to Mutt or Daniels, ever. She didn’t even speak to them unless it was work related when they were dealing with an op plan or they were on an actual op and she had no other choice but to.
