Gretchen shook her head and explained, “No, you don’t understand something here.If she took a lover outside of her vows then she knows she’s a dead woman.Her husband always told her that if he ever found out she had cheated on him, he put something in place that would guarantee she was punished.”
“Punished?”Finn frowned.“How could he do that?He’s sitting in prison right now, he canna do a thing to her.”
Timmy shook his head and answered this, “It won’t be him that punishes her.He’s got his own men.”
Gretchen nodded.“He made it very clear to her that if she cheated on him, she’ll get a bullet in her head and she wouldn't know it until it was too late to stop it.So now it all makes sense, that’s why she’s got all those men on her payroll.That’s also why she’s been in hiding.”
Chapter Nine
Seamus looked overat his Uncle Cillian.“That might be the reason she tore out of Nial’s place screaming.She must have gotten a call from Stuart telling her that her time has come.”
Darragh shrugged his shoulders.“Well, in a way this is good news for us, is it not?”
“How so brother?”Cillian asked.
“She’s got less men protecting her,” Darragh reasoned.“Less people we have to go through.”
As they all talked, Aiden hadn’t taken his eyes off Gretchen.
Gretchen finally felt him watching her and she moved yet another step away from him.She’d been stared at and judged for all her life and she didn’t like it anymore now than she did as a kid.She turned her head and scowled at him.
Aiden just grinned at her.
She growled under her breath and raised her head to listen to the conversation going on in the room.Ignoring him would be her best bet.
Finally, Timmy turned to look at her and asked, “Where is this witch staying?”He shrugged.“Is she on her island or somewhere here in town?”
Gretchen snorted.“She’s here, in the city.No money...No boat captain.So, she can’t get to her island unless she swims there and we all know she can’t swim.”
Seamus looked confused.“She can’t swim?Whyever not?”
Gretchen scoffed.“She’s afraid of being in the water.She thinks there’s too many big bad things out in these waters.And she doesn’t want to end up as gator or shark bait.”She paused then asked, “You didn’t know that?”
Seamus shook his head as did most of the others.
Gretchen snorted.“And you guys are hunting her down?You don’t know the first thing about her, do you?”
