Now Logan was hurting because of what I’d done. The position I’d put him in, put us in. And my heart hurt.
He stormed out of here because of me. I knew it in my bones, my soul. I saw something change in him right in front of me.
I couldn’t be the reason he failed.
CHAPTER 25
Logan
Becca tried to get me to stop and talk to her. But I ran to my truck and raced out of the parking lot, the tire marks twenty feet long on the pavement. I knew where I needed to go. Although, I was unsure if I really wanted to go there. After seeing Ava and the state she was in, I had to go.
Ava wasn’t in a good place. She seemed so fragile lying in her bed, so unlike the strong, sarcastic woman she usually was. I knew the wounds were fresh, and she would need time, but it hurt too much to see her like that. Instead, I needed to do something.
So, I found myself pulling up to the rugby house. Sitting in my truck, staring at the scene of the crime from the night before, made my stomach churn. It forced me to think about what he’d done to her, to see it in my mind, all over again. I wouldn’t be able to get past any of this if I didn’t find out more about this guy, and what the next steps were.
Even though it was still kind of early, my knock was hard and loud on the front door. It didn’t take long for someone to open it.
“Yeah,” the groggy kid said. He rubbed at his eyes and bare chest as he tried to discern who I was.
“Is Ashton or Sutton around?” I asked.
He held the door open as he stepped back into the room, allowing me to follow. His eyes narrowed in on me more closely as I did.
“You the guy that had the fight last night?”
Nodding, I looked around, making sure the coast was clear. I had no idea if the guy from last night lived here with them. I didn’t know much about the situation at all, to be honest.
“Man, that was fucked up. Sorry that happened to your girl, is she OK?”
My girl.
I guess to an outsider, my reaction would be that of a boyfriend. And I kind of was, or not. Our situation was so fucking confusing.
“She’s still a bit of a mess this morning, but she’ll be alright, I think.”
He nodded, though seemed concerned still.
“Oh, hey, I’m Carter, I’m on the team, too. I hear we’ll be teammates. I didn’t have a chance to meet ya last night with all the craziness.” He held out his hand, and we shook firmly.
“Nice to meet ya. That was kinda why I was coming by. I wanted to talk to Ashton, or some of the other guys, make sure, ya know, things are still cool. I don’t like how things started with me and the team last night. I know that guy is on the team and, well…”
Carter grabbed a shirt that was on the floor, pulled it over his head, and gestured for us to head to the kitchen. For the number of people who had been at the party the night before, the place was in decent condition. Only a few stray empties that I could see.
“Want anything? Water?” he asked.
I shook my head, continuing to look around for anyone else. The place seemed desolate. Carter poured himself a huge glass of water and chugged it before talking again.
“Gotta hydrate, almost in season.” He filled his glass up again. “So that dude, his name is Murphy, don’t know his first name. He’s off the team, so no worries. It’s Somers, right?”
“Yeah, Logan Somers.”
“You’ll see we go by last names around here,” he said with a laugh. “Anyway, he’s gone. We don’t put up with that shit. He knew better. There were some rumors about him, and now they were confirmed. Ashton’s pissed he didn’t kick him off sooner, before your girl got hurt. He’ll probably want to talk to you, apologize.”
Huh, so the asshole was already gone from the team. But he obviously still went to school here. I’d have to keep my eye out, make sure he didn’t bother Ava on campus.
“That’s good to hear, thanks for letting me know.” I started heading back toward the front door. “Can you let Ashton know I came by?”
Carter nodded. “Sure, man. Will I see you at practice this week? Looks like it’s warming up enough for us to get outside.”
