“Go get some beauty sleep. We want details on how things go tomorrow.”
“I’m going to see you all Friday night anyway.”
“Oh, you should invite him to Friday night drinks,” Karla said as if it were the most brilliant idea.
Yeah, she wasnotunleashing her friends on him quite yet if ever. The girls could be a bit much, and she and Rob were still new.Not even dating.
“Maybe at some point.Friday night drinks are our girls’ night.”
“True.”Thankfully, June hadn’t seen Troy since the incident.Fingers crossed, he’d found a new bar and learned a valuable lesson.“Alright, but Friday night we want a status update.”
“You got it.Night ladies.”June hung up and stared at her phone wondering if she was making a mistake in asking Rob out.She enjoyed their growing friendship, but she wanted more with him; she just didn’t want to push him if he was never going to see her as more than a friend.
How will you know if you never try?
She really hated her subconscious sometimes.
Chapter 15
Jack walked up to Rob’s desk and sat on the edge of it.Rob wanted to ignore him but knew Jack was not one to be ignored for long.“So how are things going with May?”
He also knew how to say things to get a rise out of him.Sadly, it worked every time.“It’s June, and things are fine.”
“June, yes.Are you ever going to introduce us to her?”
“I hadn’t planned on it.”It wasn’t even something he had thought about it.At first, he assumed he would only see June long enough to help her learn some defense and move on.But he had come to enjoy her company as much as spending time with her.
They had a lot in common, and he was always laughing with her.He had forgotten how good it was to laugh. And her cooking.Damn, it was a good thing he exercised so much, otherwise he wouldn’t fit through the doorway. If he wasn’t such a gentleman, he’d suggest she bring all the meals to their sessions.
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. We’re just friends.”He didn’t see a reason for introducing her to the guys.He felt selfish when it came to her.
“Friends,” he said in parentheses.“Have you hit it yet?”
Rob looked up from his computer, noting he had the attention of everyone else in the room now too.Great.“No.”Not that it was any of their business.Rob’s fists clenched in anger.Every time June came up in discussion, he got that way.He didn’t understand why.He just felt protective of her.
“Why not?”Jack pressed.
“It’s none of your concern; now get back to work.Luke wants a status update in an hour.”They had been gathering intel on Duane Flagg for the past two weeks.Rob had a feeling they would be going after him soon; they were just waiting on the green light.
But to introduce her to his friends and teammates—that seemed a major step, one he wasn’t ready for and didn’t deem necessary.
“All my work is ready for presentation.I’m more concerned about you.You seem tense.”
“No more than usual when we are working a case.”Rob looked back at his computer, trying to block Jack out.
Jack took it as a challenge and scooted off of Rob’s desk and squatted down to face level.“Luke and Greg introduced their ladies to us.”
“And they are dating.I’m not dating June.”She was just a nice girl he was helping out.He didn’t see her as a girlfriend. He didn’t have any romantic inkling toward her.
“Is there some unwritten rule that friends can’t meet friends?”
“Back off, Jack,” Drew said, rising from his seat, looking like a dark thundercloud ready to rain down upon Jack with little notice. The man had a mean temper and a wicked left hook.Rob wouldn’t want to piss him off.
Jack stood with his hands up in surrender.“I can’t be the only one curious about her.”
“It’s not our business,” Greg spoke up.
