“I haven’t seen your entourage lately. Where is your security team?”
“After almost getting caught, my boss had them back off. When I’m on runs, they’ll still follow, but that’s it. They aren’t the greatest at blending in.”
Greg couldn’t argue that. Even if he wasn’t trained to look for those kinds of things, he would have spotted them.
“They’ll be ready for the meet though,” she quickly added.
“I have no doubt.” He grinned. Greg wasn’t worried about her people as long as they stayed out of his team’s way and didn’t shoot one of them on accident.
“Has your team learned anything about where Viktor is staying or what he’s doing?”
“He’s staying at a hotel on the strip. They can’t get near his room with all the security Viktor has around him.”
“Viktor has always been paranoid. I think he’s where Maxim gets it from. Viktor also doesn’t travel much, so he can go a bit overboard.”
Greg’s contact had told him about the number of guards he’d seen at the hotel. It was staggering. Who needed so much security? If all of them were going to be at the meet, it could pose a problem, and Greg would have to call for some backup.
“He’s also scoping out Maxim’s clubs and where the drugs come in.”
“Maybe he’s learning the trade. Viktor is arranging a deal with Leo. Maybe they want a similar set-up.”
“That’s not what worries me.”
“What does?” she asked hesitantly. Her eyes appeared guarded as if she were bracing for a blow.
“Leo was with him.”
Zoe cursed. “He’s got his claws so deep in Leo. The kid idolizes him. There’s more to this deal than they are both saying. Maybe more than even Leo realizes. I fear we aren’t going to learn what until it’s too late.”
There was a knock on the door. It had to be Luke. All they could do now was prepare and hope for the best.
Chapter 20
Greg stood behind Zoe as she opened the door for Luke and Jack. “Come on in. Luke, Jack, this is Zoe.”
“Nice to meet you.” They both nodded and shook her hand.
“Where should we set up?” Jack looked around.
“The kitchen counter has the most room,” Zoe offered. “Sorry for the lack of space. This place was only meant as a hideout, not for social gatherings.”
“We’re adaptable.” Jack gave her a lop-sided grin.
Greg saw red. Was Jack hitting on her? He hoped not, but then Jack hit on any woman. Single. Married. Didn’t matter to him. He was just a shameless flirt. He had hit on Shay when she and Luke had met.
It was harmless flirting. Probably more to get a rise out of him. Greg shouldn’t take it so personally. It wasn’t like he had a claim on Zoe. They hadn’t talked about plans for the future. They were just enjoying each other’s company.
The time for that discussion would come later. For now, they needed to focus on shutting down three powerful drug lords with minimal casualties.
Jack spread out the map on the kitchen counter. Everyone stood around it in a “U” shape. Jack and Luke stood on the living room side, Greg at the end, and Zoe on the kitchen side.
“This is the building that was chosen.”
“It’s so small.”
“Exactly, it doesn’t allow for too many people inside, and it’s easy to cover all the exits. I believe it used to be an office space of some kind. All the walls have been torn down so it has an open set-up.”
“Basement?” Zoe asked.
