“I’m going to head out too.” Barry said heading for the door. “I need to get cleaned up. I’m also going to look into Flamkeyes Industrial see if it can help in our investigation.” He shrugged his big shoulders.
Drew nodded. “Thanks man.”
“Shay, thanks for the patch job.” He called over his shoulder, giving shay a slight grin.
“You’re welcome. Hopefully it will be the last.”
Doubtful.
“No promises, but I’ll do my best.” Then he walked out.
“I suppose I’ll go too.” Greg pushed up from the dining room table and headed for the door.
“There’s no need to rush off.” Drew told him. “I can give you a ride home.”
“Not necessary. We all came in our own cars. We met up just outside of town to take in one car to the buy sight so it was less conspicuous. Once we left everyone came in their own vehicle. Besides, third wheel isn’t my scene.” He said with a wink. Drew didn’t think they were so obvious. He wasn’t exactly hiding his relationship—or whatever you wanted to call it—with Shay but he wasn’t throwing it anyone’s face either. “I have to find my contact anyway. That sometimes can take a bit.”
“Keep in touch.” Drew gave him a meaningful look. Greg’s contact was most like to blame for the trap. He hated sending Greg in alone but he’d been working with his contact for a year. If a stranger came into the mix it could spook his contact and then they would be no closer to answers.
“I will.”
Chapter 24
Drew stood by the door for several moments, watching the last car leave. His mind churning what their next move should be. All they knew so far was Sykes was apart of it, but who was the mastermind behind everything. Who would want Shay? As she said she didn’t go to many places. It had to be someone with a lot of money because Sykes didn’t take a payment upfront.
He jumped when Shay’s arms wrapped around his sides and clasped in front of his stomach. He had no idea how long he’d been standing there. Must be a while if Shay came to check on him.
“Anything interesting out there?” She asked. Her head turned to the side to rest her cheek against his back.
Drew placed a hand over hers. “No, just thinking.”
“I thought I smelled smoke.” He smiled at her teasing tone.
Drew turned around to face her, wrapping his arms around her back. Her eyes searched his as if she were trying to read his mind. He kept his face neutral not wanting to let her see. “Having any luck?”
“What’s on your mind?” She asked instead. Her head cocked to the side, studying him.
Drew gave a weary sigh. He should have known it was pointless to try and distract her. It was one of the things he was coming to love about her, but at times like this it could be annoying.
Wait a minute. Had he just thought about the word love? That couldn’t be right. He didn’t love her. They hardly knew each other. It had only been a few days. Yet, the thought of his lifewithout her felt any empty void. He couldn’t keep her and yet he didn’t want to let her go.
His hands wrapped more firmly around her as if it would keep her here.
“Where are you?” Shay asked, a hand coming up to stroke the side of his face.
Drew leaned into her touch, savoring her soft fingers. Inhaling her skin. Trying to memorize everything about this moment. Hoping to burn in into his mind to look back on over the years.
“I’m right here.”
Shay smiled. “Liar.”
She caught him. “There’s no many unknowns. The enemy list feels like its growing instead of shrinking. My team was compromised. Even now Greg is meeting with his informant and I don’t know if there’s another trap or—” Shay placed a hand over his mouth to shush him.
“How many times have you told me to trust your team? That they know what they’re doing.”
“A lot.” He mumbled.
“Then maybe you should listen to your own words. They know what they’re doing. We’ll find Sykes and the person responsible for my kidnapping.”
