Chapter twenty-one

Dark Angel

My laughter rings out over the night.

He thinks he escaped me.

The other one will seek me out. Her music will draw him back.

Chapter twenty-two

Remy

We pull up in front of our Garden District house. My father got bored with it, so we moved in.

It gives us room to breathe. I feel myself relaxing as we climb the steps to the veranda.

The door isn’t locked. Not fully latched.

I push it open and stop.

Luggage stacked neatly in the foyer.

No furniture in the house.

A black note in silver script propped against the bags.

Erik snorts and moves forward.

My arm shoots out, blocking him.

My jaw locks.

I step closer and study the note, then the empty room.

Nothing looks disturbed. Nothing out of place.

That doesn’t mean anything.

My gaze returns to the note.

How many warnings will she allow me to ignore?

Erik is delighted.

I’ve been outmaneuvered.

I pause. Reassess.

I don’t lose.

And I won’t start by losing to her.
