To my relief, Jake grinned. “Something like that,” he said, “but I’m also serious, Reyes. I can’t do it alone. If you want me to do this, you need to move in with me. At least until he goes back.”
I feigned horror. “And deal with your shitty water pressure?”
He laughed. “And microkitchen.”
“And short fridge.”
“And squeaky doors.”
I arched a brow. “Actually, squeaky doors might come in handy, with a kid in the house.”
His eyes softened, returning to the familiar warmth I’d come to know and love. Before he took a step away, I slid my arms around him. I hadn’t thought about moving in with Jake for this, but the more I thought of the logistics of it, the more I knew Jake was right. It made sense for me to be there since Harrison and I had a stronger connection. It would make it easier for everyone.
“How soon will it happen?” he asked.
“I’m not sure. Very soon though. Wyatt needs to head up to Charleston in a couple days, that’s all I know. I have the social worker’s phone number, so I’ll call her and figure it out. Hopefully she won’t have an issue with me moving in.”
“Okay. Just let me know what I need to do.”
I stood and pulled him in for a kiss. “Thank you,” I whispered. It was so insignificant compared to what he was doing for Harrison – forme, really – but it was all I could think to say.
His radio buzzed with a message from dispatch. He gave me a smile before reaching for his handset clipped to his chest and pressed the button. “Copy that. Two thirty-seven, en route.” To me, he said, “I gotta go, babe.”
I kissed him. “See you tonight, Officer.”
He smirked. “Adios,Sexy Eyes.”
