I huff. "I don't look snobby."

"Only snobby people would wear that." Eve points to my cardigan sweater. It's white and has tiny pearl buttons.

"It's just a sweater. Anyone could wear it."

"Would you wear that?" Eve asks Janelle.

She bites her lip. "Probably not."

"She's being nice," Eve says to me. "Janelle would never wear that. Nobody here would. You might as well be wearing one of those navy blazers with a gold crest on it."

Chad has one like that, but I'm going to keep that little fact to myself.

Janelle laughs. "Or one of those tiny scarves around your neck."

"Oh my God, yes!" Eve says, laughing with Janelle. "Tell me you don't have one of those," she says to me.

I don't answer.

"You do, don't you?" Eve says.

"I have three," I mutter, followed by a laugh. "But they were gifts, and I never liked them. When I wore them, they made me feel like I was choking."

"There he is," Eve says, watching Evan walk out of the school. "Hurry up!" she yells at him, then she turns to Janelle. "Hey, are you going to the game tomorrow? Brook wants to see her man play but she doesn't have anyone to go with."

"Who's your man?" Janelle asks.

"He's not my man," I say.

"But she has a crush on him," Eve says.

"I do not!" I insist. "I don't even like him."

"Who is it?" Janelle asks.

"Dean Sanders," Eve says, smiling at me. "She thinks he's hot."

I give her the death stare. "I never said that."

"You never said he wasn't. And the way you look at him, you definitely think he's hot."

"He IS hot," Janelle says. "But you know what he's like right? Girls call him the Destroyer."

"Because he destroys hearts," I say. "Yeah, I heard. And despite what Eve thinks, I'm not interested in him. I have a boyfriend."

"Who ignores her," Eve says to Janelle. "Tell her how Aaron treats you when you go out with him and his friends." Eve looks at me. "Aaron's her boyfriend."

"He acts like they're not even there," she says with a laugh. "They always tease him about it."

"See?" Eve throws her hands up. "Told you."

"What do mean he acts like they're not there?" I ask Janelle.

"Like he doesn't really talk to them. All his attention is on me. He kisses me in front of them. Holds my hand. Says all this really sweet stuff. He doesn't care that the guys make fun of him. He tells them if they don't like it they shouldn't hang out with us, but they still do. We're all really good friends."

"What the hell took you so long?" Eve asks Evan as he goes around her to open the car door.

"I was busy."
