He stops and turns to me. "I'm not mad at you. But we're not friends. So stop following me around and asking all these questions. Just leave me alone."
I watch as he continues down the hall. I don't understand this. Last night he acted like he wanted to be friends. Why would he act that way and then tell me to leave him alone?
Did I do something to upset him, or is this just how he is? Dean was a jerk when I met him and maybe the guy I was with last night was all an act. Maybe he WAS trying to sleep with me. I don't want to believe that's true, but maybe it is and I need to accept it and realize the guy I met last night wasn't real.
But he definitely felt real.
Chapter Twelve
Brook
Thursday at school I try to talk to Dean again but he pretends he doesn't hear me. Every time I get near him, he walks off.
By the end of the day I decide just to leave him alone. It's too bad he's being this way because I really liked talking to him. That night at his house was unlike any time I'd ever spent with a guy. Dean listened and asked me questions and acted like he genuinely cared. But I guess it was all an act.
"What are you doing this weekend?" I ask Eve as we're leaving school.
"Going to my dad's house," she says with a sigh. "It's his birthday Saturday so I can't get out of it."
"I didn't know your parents are divorced. When did it happen?"
"A long time ago. Evan and I were probably like four or five. My mom has us during the week and my dad's supposed to get us on weekends but now that we're older, he lets us decide. We usually go there once a month." She stops next to her car. "Where the hell is Evan? I told him not to be late. I have that job interview at four."
"That's right. I hope you get it."
She applied at a clothing store close to her house. If she gets the job, she'll have to work weekends. I was hoping we could do stuff together on weekends but now I'll have to find someone else.
"What are you doing this weekend?" she asks.
"I don't know yet. Probably study. Maybe watch a movie. My mom has to work."
"You're not going to see your boyfriend?"
"Not this weekend. He has too much going on. Hey, are you going to the game tomorrow?"
"The football game? No. I don't like sports. And I told my mom I'd go to a movie with her tomorrow night. She just broke up with her boyfriend and she's depressed."
"Is your brother going to the game?"
"I don't think so. Why? Are you going?"
"I was thinking about it."
"You like football?"
"No, but I kind of want to see Dean play. Everyone keeps saying how good he is."
She smiles. "You want to see his ass in those tight pants, don't you?"
"No! I wasn't even thinking about that."
"You should. The guy's got a great ass. His whole body is amazing. I once saw him without a shirt, and no lie, you could see every muscle. His chest. His abs. The guy must have like zero body fat." She goes around me, waving at someone. "Janelle, have you seen my brother?"
"He's at his locker, talking to someone." Janelle glances at me and smiles. "Hi. You're new here, right?"
"Yeah." I walk up to her. "I'm Brook."
Eve puts her arm over my shoulder. "She looks snobby but she's actually pretty cool."
