“Oh…right.”
Turning to Glenn, Sawyer explained the involvement of the lawyer in Alex’s life until his father died. “As far as our mate knew, his father’s lawyer and the headmaster were the only ones who knew about him being a dual-shifter, other than his father.”
“So we have two prime suspects.”
“My headmaster died before I left so it would only be my father’s lawyer who could have disclosed it,” Alex said.
“Unless your headmaster sold the information before he died,” Sawyer muttered.
“Sawyer’s right. According to the information I have, the man The Collector hired to capture you has been looking for you since last year. When did your headmaster die?” asked Glenn.
“I’m not sure… I think it was after my father died,” replied Alex, shrugging.
“We don’t know if your father told anyone either.” Sawyer reminded Alex.
Frowning, Alex muttered, “I don’t think so…look at what he did to keep me hidden.”
“I have to agree with Alex on that,” Glenn said. “There aren’t any records of you anywhere, including the Registry of Dragon Births.”
“How do you…oh, secret agent stuff.” Alex scowled. There went the last bit of hope that his father ever loved him. The sharp pain piercing his heart, told him how much he needed to believe his father did care for him, even though there was nothing to show for it other than his inheritance.Inheritance! “Hey, maybe I can pay The Collector to leave me alone?”
“Sorry, I don’t think it’ll work. As far as I know, The Collector isn’t interested in money,” Glenn said, quietly, a sharp pain piercing his heart at seeing the ray of hope in Alex’s eyes fade. Swearing to himself, he was going to kill The Collector if, for no other reason, than seeing what his mate was going through.
“Does Dylon know the Collector is after Alex?” asked Sawyer.
“Yes…while trying to discover the asshole’s location, a member of my team learned The Collector was after Alexandre Fouché, an Omega dragon supposedly in the LA area,” Glenn said. “We were trying to find you, but before we could, Dylon called, asking me to escort the two of you to the Blackwood Pack.”
“Did you tell him I was your mate?” asked Sawyer.
Shaking his head, Glenn said, “No…I didn’t, because it wasn’t right. I didn’t know what kind of relationship you have with your cousin’s mate so without first getting your okay, I wasn’t going to say a word.”
“Okay…so what’s your plan?” asked Sawyer. “You do have one, don’t you?”
Snorting, Glenn said, “A rough draft. If Alex and you agree, I want you both to come back with me to Ghost’s house. First of all, no one would suspect you’d be there, but if someone’s been watching you, they’d know about Sawyer. A two second search in the High Council records would link Sawyer to the Blackwood Pack.”
“Yeah, but my cousins could protect us,” Sawyer said.
Glancing sharply at Sawyer, Glenn replied, “Maybe…but do you want to take the chance one of them might get wounded…or worse, killed…in doing so?”
“Low fucking blow,” Sawyer growled. “Of course not, but there are things you don’t know that I do.”
“True…but I know about Dylon, Cody, and Zane’s abilities. And even with them, I still think you and Alex would be better off at Ghost’s house.”
“What are you talking about?” asked Alex, looking bewildered. “I don’t want to go anywhere. My trailer is here…so is Sawyer’s. And how come I get the feeling both of you know something I don’t? I hate being in the dark, especially when it ismylife on the line.”
“I was going to tell you in the morning,” Sawyer murmured.
“Well, apparently Glenn knows. Once again, my future is being decided by someone else. And don’t give me any bullshit about doing it for my own good. I had a lifetime of that crap fed to me.” Struggling out of Sawyer’s grasp, Alex crossed his arms over his chest before giving both of his mates his death stare—or at least what he hoped was his death stare. Never having done it before, Alex could only wish it was fierce enough so his mates could see how upset he was.
Biting the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling at his gorgeous, angry mate, Glenn knew Alex was spot on with his assessment of how Sawyer and he were acting. “You’re right…and I’m sorry. My only excuse is my need to protect you from danger. But that wasn’t justification to behave the way I did.”
“I’m sorry, too, Alex. My wolf has been going crazy ever since Glenn told us someone was after you.”
“Thank you. I do understand a mate’s need to protect and I really do like that you both feel that way about me because…well…it’s never happened to me before. But I need you to understand when you talk about me in front of me as if I’m not there, I end up in a dark place of my childhood…and I don’t like it.”
Glancing at Sawyer who nodded at him, Glenn looked at Alex. “We won’t do it again.”
“But if we fall back into it,” Sawyer promised, “all you have to do is call us out and we’ll stop immediately, because neither of us want to cause you any unhappiness.”
