I sigh, running a hand through my hair, wondering for the first time how that must look to Dalia since she’s unable to see our heads. This has to be odd for her.

“I’m not sure how many MCs you’ve had the pleasure—or displeasure—of dealing with, but I put out the call to some of our allies. I was hoping they would make it before the battle, but I haven’t heard anything—and, clearly, they haven’t arrived yet.”

Dalia wrinkles her nose. “That’s probably something you should’ve mentioned to the council. We haven’t had the best interactions with MCs in the past.”

Knowing she’s right, I nod. “You’re right. I just didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up in case they didn’t manage to make it here in time. I should’ve thought about how it would look if they just showed up. I wasn’t thinking.”

“It’s okay,” Dalia assures me, already moving toward the door. “Either way, I appreciate you attempting to find others to help us.”

I growl under my breath, annoyed that no one has shown up. Even before realizing who and what Dalia is to us, I would’ve wanted the other MCs to help, but now? Knowing that she’s our mate, I’m desperate for help.

I think we’re going to need it.

Stepping outside, the sounds of bikes revving brings a smile to my face. My MC will do what we can to make sure this city is safe.

“I need to find my sisters.” Dalia smiles as Seraphina canters toward her, running her hand over the horse’s head when she comes to a stop. “I’ll see you at the bridge.”

Before she can climb onto her horse’s back, Titan sweeps her into his arms and crushes his lips against hers.

“Be careful,” he grumbles, handing her off to Blaze as I stalk over.

Blaze mumbles something too quiet for me to pick up before kissing her. Impatient, I pull her out of his arms and into mine.

“We’ll wait for you. I want you at our side during the battle.” I brush my lips over hers before adding," Please."

Dalia rolls her eyes but nods. “I can accept that. Now, take care of your guys while I find my sisters. I’ll see you soon.”

I don’t want to let her go, wanting to keep her safe in my arms, but I know that isn’t an option. I reluctantly release her and take a step back.

She sinks her hand into Seraphina’s mane, ready to mount, but Titan lifts her by her waist and sets her astride the horse. She gives him a soft smile before digging her knees into the mare’s sides and taking off.

For a moment, all I can do is watch her ride away as fear grips me.

“We keep her safe—no matter what.” Blaze’s voice is hard, so unlike his usual easygoing personality.

Titan grunts his acknowledgment, and I realize all three of us are staring after her.

“No matter what,” I agree before tearing my eyes away from the woman who has quickly become our entire world. “Let’s rally the troops.”

Two hours later, we’re still awaiting Renwick’s attack. The citizens of Iero, alongside my guys, stare out at the horizon where it looks like a storm is brewing, but we know better.

The fight is on its way to us, and we’re as prepared as we can be.

“Are you sure you want to be here for this?” Morrigan asks Dalia, a frown marring her beautiful face.

“Want to be?” Dalia scoffs. “Of course I don’t want to be here—none of us want to be here, Mor—but I need to be here.”

Phoebe’s smile is soft as she links her fingers with Dalia’s. “No one would blame you if you didn’t want to see him again.”

“I would,” she snaps before sighing. “I’m sorry. I know why you’re asking, and I appreciate it, but this is my fight.”

“It’s our fight,” Phoebe assures her.

Dalia nods. “Because of me.”

“Stop it,” Morrigan barks. “It doesn’t matter why he’s here—just that he is, and we won’t let him destroy everything we’ve built.”

“I know. You’re right.” She waves her sisters off. “I’m fine, I promise. I already promised the three of them I’d stay with them for the fight. I won’t be on my own.”
