“You made her cry?” Robert and Jake said in unison.

“No.” If he wasn’t so miserable, he would’ve laughed at their protectiveness. “She cried because she felt bad about what she’d said.” Raking his fingers through his hair, Ben let out a tight chuckle. “You guys have no idea how hard it was to come out this evening. I was having a good time, but you’re ruining it.”

“We’re glad you texted, Ben.” Jake slapped him on the shoulder. “I know it’s been hard, but it’s good to have you back.”

“I wouldn’t say I’m back, yet.” He let out another sigh. “It’s a start, I guess, but I’ve got a long way to go.”

“I’m glad you’re trying.” Robert sat on his four-wheeler. “But maybe you should try to think of a way to make Amy feel better. She’s really upset with herself.”

Robert started his four-wheeler and took off, leading what turned out to be a rather dangerous race back to the ranch house.

Not only did Ben lose the race, he had no idea how to make Amy feel better.
