Chapter 25

Monday morning, Amy sat at her desk wondering where to start.

She was almost certain, if she could find Eddie, she’d find Ben’s daughter. She’d studied the picture on her phone last night and was convinced Cassey was the baby she’d seen Eddie’s wife holding. But where did she find Eddie?

Chewing her bottom lip, she did a general Internet search on Edward Green. The whole first page of results were of an English shoemaker, creator of theGentleman’s Footwear. She scrolled through other results finding nothing of interest.

Returning to the search bar, she typed in Eddie Green and hit enter. Leaning forward, she studied the results. A Great Depression era bank robber, an African American actor who died in 1950, and a football player for Brigham Young University, wherever that was.

Something tightened around Amy’s midsection and a restlessness filled her as she studied the remaining results. None of them looked like the Eddie Green she knew. Searches of social network sites yielded nothing, which didn’t surprise Amy. Of course, if Eddie had kidnapped Cassey he would keep a low profile.

How am I supposed to find Cassey if I can’t figure out where Eddie lives?

If only she could remember Eddie’s wife’s name.

Frustrated, she went to the records room and got Melanie’s file. She thought she was prepared this time for the photos it contained, but they still hit her harder than she expected.

She took a deep breath and searched for the information about the vehicle that hit Melanie. There it was. Atlantic blue metallic 1996 Chevrolet Suburban. What shade of blue was Eddie’s Suburban? It had always appeared almost black under the streetlights. For the third time since hearing about the accident, Amy searched for ‘96 Suburbans and grill guards.

After seeing both on her computer screen, she was certain that’s what Eddie’s Suburban had looked like.

How do I find Eddie, though?

Amy’s eyes darted to the clock when she spotted Janice’s car pulling in the front parking lot.Is it almost noon already? She shoved Melanie’s file into the top desk drawer under other miscellaneous papers.

Hopefully, she’d find more information tomorrow.

Amy leanedagainst the corner of Rudy’s desk. “How would I go about finding out where an old friend lives now?”

“I have access to an awesome database that has all the information you could ever want on a person.” Then he grimaced. “But I could get fired if I used it for personal reasons.”

Amy’s face fell. “That’s what I was afraid of.”

“You can get most of the same information yourself online. Here, I’ll show you.” Rudy turned to his computer. “What’s the name?”

She thought about giving the name of a high school friend, but she might only have one chance at this.

It would be easier to tell Robert or Rudy her suspicions and let them help find the information she needed. But as certain as she was, she didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, in case she was wrong. Or in the event they found Eddie Green, but he no longer had Ben’s daughter.

Melanie’s death and Cassey’s disappearance had rocked this community. She didn’t want to open any wounds or give anyone hope until she had a worthwhile lead.

“Eddie Green.”

Rudy’s eyebrows raised. “An old boyfriend? Do I need to warn the sheriff?”

“No!” Amy said, louder than she intended. She lowered her voice. “He’s just a friend. I’m curious where he’s at and what he’s been up to. That’s all.”

I’m really curious about what he’s been up to.

Why would Rudy think he needed to warn Robert? Did he assume there was something between her and Robert? She’d only gone out on one date with him, but Ben did say Robert viewed their lunches as dates. Technically, Robert was on duty when he took her out to lunch, so it couldn’t be considered dating, could it?

That would stop now that she worked afternoons at the diner. Either way, she didn’t want Robert to know anything about Eddie, yet. Not until she found out whether he had Cassey.

Rudy scrolled through the Eddies who were basketball and rugby players and clicked on a link that opened a list of additional Eddie Greens. “Let’s see. There are several Eddie Greens here,” Rudy said. “Do you know his parents’ name, or siblings, maybe a spouse?”

“Um... I don’t remember.”
