“Yeah, Ruby?”

My mouth opened to beg him for a kiss, but was rudely interrupted by his phone ringing.

He blinked, then fished his phone out of his pocket, his face etching with concern. “Shit, I need to take this.” He moved away from me, and all the lust inside of me deflated.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

“Darrius? Whoa! Slow down. Take a few deep breaths man. What’s going on? Okay. Okay. I’m glad you called me. Yeah, I can meet you in like ten minutes. Don’t do anything stupid, please.”

He hung up the phone, looking straight up panicked.

“I gotta go.”

“What’s going on?”

He started frantically looking for clothes, throwing on a shirt, and pulling on pants and boots before stumbling towards the door.

“It’s Darrius.”

“Darrius?”

He shot me a quick glance. “He’s a client of mine. He’s about to do something really stupid if I don’t get to him now.”

“Can I come with you?”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea, Ruby.”

“Please, Cap. I don’t want to stay here alone.”

His shoulders slumped. “Shit, you’re right. Okay, come with me, but I need you to stay outside.”

“Why?”

“Just trust me, please.”

“Okay.”

I followed him out the door, and he immediately mounted his bike. I hesitated just outside of it. I hadn’t ridden a bike since Chase died.

“Are you coming or not?”

“Can’t we take your truck?”

“My bike is faster, Ruby. If you don’t want to go, that’s fine, but I have to leave. Now!” he practically shouted the last word at me.

Something was very, very wrong.

Knowing that Cap was getting upset, I climbed onto the bike behind him, settling in until my arms were wrapped around his waist and my head was resting on his back. I’d done this a million times with Chase, but with Cap it felt so different. Safer almost.

“Hang on,” he yelled over his shoulder, roaring his bike to life.

We raced along the streets, barely stopping at stop signs and abiding by traffic laws. He didn’t stop until we were pulling into the driveway of a small house, one that looked rundown and in need of some fixing up.

“How’d it get this bad?” Cap grumbled, dismounting the bike to race inside. “Stay here.”

He disappeared inside the house, leaving me alone to stew in my thoughts.

What is going on in there?
