Victor

Renee pushed a button to end a phone call. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Her stunned expression was startling.

“What?”

“That was Vince Hart. The Attorney General’s investigation into PAC funds has been quashed.”

“You don’t say,” Victor murmured.

“How did you do it?” Renee asked, astounded.

“I did nothing. I had a conversation with Jack Storm. He said he’d handle it. Good shit. I guess he did, huh?”

Victor had no clue how he did, but true to his word, Jack made his legal problem disappear.

“What do you mean?” Renee asked with furrowed brows. “How could Jack Storm influence the State Attorney General’s office?”

Not willing to be interrogated by his press secretary, he simply shrugged. Victor had no illusions about the amount of influence Jack held. He didn’t know the specifics, and he didn’t care. The night before, Jack had assured him that his every dime was legit and that he would handle the Attorney General. With everything he knew about Jack Storm, he had no reason to doubt his sincerity. So, after his jerk-off session in the shower, he went to bed without worrying about a pending indictment.

“You got anything else?”

Renee paused in response to his dismissiveness. When she didn’t answer, he did something that he never liked to do and repeated himself.

“Is there anything else, Renee?”

She sighed and placed a folder in his hand. “Just set a date for the gubernatorial debate.”

Victor's eyes snapped from the folder to Renee. “How did you pull that off?”

Now, Victor was surprised. Bill Thornton, his opponent, had been avoiding a debate like the plague. Anytime Victor’s team mentioned a debate, the democrat acted as if they were discussing the apocalypse. But he really couldn’t blame the man. With his stuttering indecisiveness, Victor could understand why he didn’t want to face off in front of millions.

“What’s the date?”

“October 29thin the Rosemont Park Hall.”

“Really, Renee, how did you get him to agree to that?”

“Governor, I can be very persuasive when need be. And…you’re ahead in the polls. Your support base is secure. If he doesn’t debate, this election is over him.”

“And me?” Victor asked. “What do I need to stay ahead?”

“Win the debate and…” She smirked with a raised brow. “Try not to get indicted.”

Victor laughed. He walked over to Renee and placed his hand on her shoulder “I can do that,” he assured with a grin.

“Good.”

“And, rest assured, once Iamreelected, we can concentrate on the White House. You, me, and Kena are gonna go all the way. You ready for that?”

Renee smiled. “Damn right, I am. We’re gonna run the free world and fix what’s broken in the White House.

When she raised her hand for a high five, Victor slapped his hand against hers.

“Team Creed,” she called in a bubbly tone, their fingers locked. “Team Creed.”

Renee twisted her fingers out of his and grabbed the folder from his desk. “First, we gotta kill the debate,” she pointed out.
