Victoria narrowed her eyes as if she was trying to remember. Then she gasped as if coming to a realization.
“The rapist? That was months ago. Why the hell are they just now looking for him?”
“I don't know. Why don't you call ‘em back in here and ask ‘em?” Tracy snapped.
“Don't get smart with me, heffa,’ Victoria replied, rolling her eyes.
Tracy walked around her desk and over to the sofa. “I’m sorry,” she muttered as she plopped down on the soft cushion. “It’s the hormones. I swear, Vic, I’ve been super testy lately.”
Victoria waved off her apology. “Forget it. Let’s go get some lunch.”
Tracy shook her head. “I told you that I ate already. Besides, I gotta catch up on some work.”
Tracy massaged her temple. She could feel a headache coming on no doubt from the lack of caffeine in her life since becoming pregnant. Unfortunately, Tracy had already missed so many days from work. And, due to Tammy and Luca’s wedding, she’d be missing even more days. She needed to get as much work done as possible while she could.
“Okay. I guess we’ll see you later then,” Emily said, grabbing her purse from Tracy’s desk.
“Wait…what are you guys really doing here?” Tracy asked.
Victoria and Emily showing up, unannounced, while the detectives were there was just too much of a coincidence.
“Your assistant. She called Francis. Francis called Emily. She and I were headed to lunch when she got the call.”
Tracy exhaled a breath while continuing to massage her temple. Her assistant actually called Francis. Of course, she had to be under strict instructions, but it didn't sit right with her. Kim worked for her, not Francis. Well, technically, since he owned the company, they all worked for Francis. But in Tracy’s opinion, her assistant’s loyalty should be to her and her alone.
Tracy stood, reluctantly abandoning to the softness of the sofa. She walked around her desk and planted herself in her chair. “Are you guys free for dinner tonight?” Tracy asked them both.
“Hell, I’m always free,” Emily muttered.
“Nah. I got plans with Jack. I gotta do something to get off his shit list,” Victoria remarked.
“Damn. Is he still pissed at you? For some reason I assumed you gave good head,” Tracy quipped.
“Shit, me too,” Victoria responded with a sigh. “I guess I’ma have to step up my oral.”
“Umm…can I not hear this?” Emily chimed. “I’m totally and completely disgusted.”
“Yeah…yeah…yeah. By the way, Emily, you're way too pretty to be so fucking lonely,” Victoria pointed out.
“I’m not lonely. I’m just picky. There’s a difference.”
Tracy powered up her desktop and leaned back in her chair. “Can you be remorseful, and you be picky somewhere else? I have work to do.”
“God, you're no fun,” Victoria huffed, tucking her purse under her arm.
She turned on her heel. Tracy listened to the click clack of her and Emily’s heels as they exited her office.
“Wait, Em!” Tracy shouted at their backs.
Emily stopped and turned to Tracy.
“Meet at the Gibson’s? 7?”
“Yup, but make it 7:30. You're not the only that has to work for a living.”
“Okay, cool.”
The ladies left her office, closing the door behind them. Tracy noticed that she was tapping her foot as she stared at her favorite coffee cup. It readNerds Rule.
