“Who’s the client?” the other detective asked, breaking his silence.
“Antonio Carlucci of Donati Pharmaceuticals.”
Tracy knew that Antonio was nothing more than a figurehead. Francis was the owner of Donati Pharmaceuticals, but she wasn't about to share that information with the cops.
“I understand that there was some tension between the two of you?”
Clearly, they’d been talking to someone before coming to her. They obviously wanted to hit Tracy with some hard questions, but she wasn't intimidated. She crossed her arms and gave the detective a cool smile.
“Detective, there is often tension in the workplace. Essentially, when it comes down to it, we are nothing more than glorified salesmen. If we don't sell, we don't eat. This can be very stressful at times.”
Detective Harris nodded and jotted something in his notepad before asking, “When was the last time you saw Mr. Thompson, Miss Baker?”
Before Tracy could answer, her office door flew open, and Victoria and Emily rushed inside.
“Hola, chica! We came to take you to lunch,” Victoria announced in a bubbly manner.
She stopped suddenly, as if she were surprised to see the detectives.
“I’m sorry. Your assistant wasn't at her desk. I didn't know you were busy.”
“It’s okay,” Tracy assured. “But, I’ve already had lunch.”
“Well, we haven’t. So you can take us to lunch.”
Tracy chuckled. “I’m sorry, detectives. Forgive my rude friends. This is—”
“Victoria Storm,” Detective Harris blurted.
Victoria smiled, but she was noticeably surprised. “Detectives, huh? Do you work for this firm?”
“No, CPD,” Detective Harris corrected.
“Oh. And you know me?” Victoria asked.
“Of course. The entire department has heard of Victoria Price.”
His sarcasm hadn't escaped Tracy, but Victoria wouldn’t be baited.
“Damn, okay. Well, meet my sister-in-law, Emily Storm. She’s the family attorney.”
She had successfully alerted the detectives that Tracy had the benefit of counsel.
“Nice to meet you,” Detective Harris greeted.
As if he were looking into the face of an angel, the detective openly stared. Emily graced him with a sweet, sexy smile that Tracy had often seen her use to soften the hardest of men. She batted long, dark lashes, purposely bringing attention to the bright blue of her eyes. The detective couldn't hide his attraction even if he wanted.
“Sorry for the interruption,” Emily said softly, extending her hand. “It’s good to meet you. Is this an official visit?”
“Um…no, it’s okay. We just had a few questions for Miss Baker, but we’re done here.”
“Oh, well it was nice to meet you both.”
Detective Harris nodded and moved, reluctantly, toward the door. Carson, the other detective, followed without a word. When they cleared the doorway, Victoria hurried to close the door. She and Emily turned to Tracy.
“What did they want?” Emily asked. “The shooting?”
“Naw,” Tracy responded, shaking her head. “They're looking for Will.”
