“This is from the cocktail fountain!” she shouts as she hands me a cup. I take a sip and grimace. I can't tell what it was originally. It's been spiked so much it tastes like perfume. If I end up head first in a ditch at least my puke will smell like 'Chanel'.
We drink up and dance with 'David Guetta' filling the room. Jumping up and down when the beat drops. The hall is packed with people enjoying themselves and I spot Christian heading over. He's tall and handsome with sandy brown hair. Cassey has been flirting with him for months.
Maybe he's finally plucked up the courage to ask her out?
He saunters over with a smile and I notice a slight blush to his cheeks.
“Hey Cass, did you maybe wanna dance?” He asks hopefully.
“I thought you'd never ask.” Cassey says biting her lip.
His grin widens as he pulls her towards him and they're slowly engulfed by the sea of bodies.
I smile to myself at Cassey getting the win after gushing over him for ages. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and I'm happy for her.
I realise my cup is empty and I head over to the drinks table at the side of the hall. I can just about spot Christian amidst the dance floor then turn to refill my cup.
In the corner of eye I glimpse a hooded figure and I startle. Blinking away my tipsy fog, but when my eyes focus there's nothing but college students enjoying themselves.
“Fuck sake.” I mutter to myself as I hold my cup under the cocktail fountain.
I take a deep breath and let it out forcefully. Determined not to let another man ruin my fun. I sip my drink and watch Cassey dancing with Christian. Her smile is bright and flirty and his gaze doesn't leave hers. They look like such the perfect couple. Both Gorgeous and lost in the moment with each other.
The song changes again to 'Sweet but Psycho' by Ava Max and immediately Cassey tries to find me. It's one of our favourite songs and I down my drink and push my way through all the bodies to get to her. She's already singing the words as she grabs my hands. Christian laughs as Cassey and I practically serenade each other as we dance.
I'm having the best time and the tunes the DJ plays are killing it!
We dance through the evening and we all cheer when the King and Queen of Valentines get crowned. Their a popularcouple whose parents are on the college comity. It's no surprise that they got chosen. She gets given a bouquet of roses and he gets a plastic bow and arrow that he makes a show of pretending to shoot. We clap as they dance together.
I get lost to the music as the dance floor fills up more and more. I occasionally get bumped or I accidentally bump other people. I'm tipsy enough to barely notice, so when I feel a pair of hands on my waist I don't think anything of it. Guessing it’s probably Cassey having a laugh I reach behind me and grind my butt against her. Instead of Cassey's slight frame I feel someone distinctly taller. The smell of Lynx engulfs me, invading my drunken haze. It is definitely not my best friend.
I spin around and come face to face with Nick who wastes no time in putting both hands around me and squeezing my arse as he pulls me against him. I instinctively pull away putting both hands on his chest but he holds onto me tighter.
“Do you mind?!” I glare at him and twist out of his grip.
“No, I don't mind and you didn't either when you were rubbing that sexy arse on me.” he said with a massive grin.
“I thought you were Cassey. Where is she anyway?” I stretch up on my tip toes to try and see over the sea of bodies and spot her a few feet away dirty dancing with Christian. It was about time they had a chance to get to know one another but selfishly I think they had the worst timing.
As I'm looking across the crowd Nick wraps his arms around me again and pulls me against him pressing his crotch against me. I cringe and push away from him but his grip doesn't loosen. I feel his warm breath against my ear. It stinks of alcohol. “Looks like your friend is busy. Come on relax, dance with me.”
Like I'm gonna relax when this guy is so determined to piss me off. I try my hardest to peel his hands off of me. “Look I don't want to dance so let go of me.”
“Course you do. I've been looking forward to this all day.” He leans right into me and buries his face in my hair inhaling deeply.
I've tried to be nice but he seriously isn't getting it. I stomp on his foot as hard as I can and he jumps away from me. “Ow! What was that for?!”
Like they guy doesn't know?! Aside from me thinking for a second that he was Cassey I've not given the impression that I'm even remotely attracted to him. “Get this through your head! I'm not interested!” I storm off in the direction of Cassey. Shimmying through all the people dancing. My buzz from my two practically lethal cocktails is gone and instead I'm left feeling light headed and dizzy. It's suddenly far too hot and my ears start ringing. The flashing lights just serve to disorientate me more and I feel bile rise up in my throat. I attempt to leg it to the exit but someone bumps into me and I lose my balance. I put my hands out as I fall forward and feel something stick into my hand as I hit the floor. Strangely it doesn't hurt even though I know it should. Must be the alcohol. Note to self don't mix spirits and definitely don't drink from a cocktail fountain at a college dance.
I try to push myself up again but the world spins.
I feel two hands under my arms lift me up and I look around to see Cassey and Christian.
“Hey Chicca let’s get you outside for some fresh air.” I hear Cassey laugh. “There must be more in that fountain than I thought.”
I think about saying something back but it seems like too much effort. After what seems like ages we go through a set of doors into a hallway. The air is instantly cooler and I flop down on the floor against the wall. I close my eyes willing the world to stop moving but it feels worse so I open them again. I can only hear my breathing and I try to get it to slow down.
Cassey kneels in front of me holding a bottle of water. “Here drink this you'll feel better.”
