It was as if he were peeling his walls down, and he was showing all of us his true self. And within that, I saw a frightened child.
I understood why he’d waited to tell us. I’d been horrified about what I did to Mirella, and I probably wouldn’t have known how to process too much at once.
The letter was from a woman, that much was obvious, and it would’ve sent me over the edge hearing that Rhett was receiving letters from other women. I wasn’t sure if the matebonds were adding to my possessiveness, but I’d been a lot more possessive of my mates lately.
“They start off the letter by explaining why they’re attracted to me.”
My heart hammered in my throat, and a jealous sort of rage rose within me.
Rhett’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as he paused again. His expression filled with pain.
“We could kill them,” Damien offered, running a hand through his hair.
Alister let out a sigh. “We can’t just kill everyone.”
“Why not? Wouldn’t it solve the problem?” Damien tilted his head.
Thorn chuckled. “I have to agree with the shadow demon.”
Damien smirked.
“We can’t kill them because we don’t know who it is.” Rowan’s hot breath hit the back of my neck, and I grew unsettled.
Rhett took in a shaky breath. “They go on to recount my daily routine, and they start going into explicit detail about every encounter I have had with Wren since the day I met her. I believe whoever wrote it has been following me for a few years now. I don’t think it’s new. I think Wren coming here put a kink in their original plans. They also mention in the letter how Wren is never alone, and that one of her, and I quote this, admirers, is always with her.”
The guys growled.
“They go on to talk about how pretty she is and how they wonder what it’s like to be her. I’m not gonna read it word-for-word, because it makes me sick.” Rhett stopped talking and swallowed hard. “I’m telling you this so you know we’re being watched, and I know with everything going on, this is just another thing to pile on top of it. We need to make sure Wren’s safe.”
Safe? He was worried about me, but I was more worried about him. The letter shook my incubus, and that in itself made me angry.
“Thorn, could you let Lachlan and Kian know as well, so they can keep an eye out?” Rowan asked.
Rhett took a step back and sat in the seat, as if Rowan taking over had physically relieved him.
I slid off Rowan’s lap and moved around the desk toward Rhett. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I placed myself on his lap and kissed his cheek.
“Wren…” Rhett murmured before enveloping me in a tight embrace.
I didn’t need the bond to tell me that he needed me. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Damien’s horns grew in as his tail twitched behind him. “I see everything at this academy, and I have not once seen anyone following Rhett or Wren. I’d love to cut them open and see what makes them think they can hide from me.”
Alister rubbed his forehead. “You really are a psycho.”
Damien’s lips lifted into a cruel smile as he bent forward in a dramatic bow. “Thank you.”
Thorn’s ice magic whipped around him, and his hair lifted away from his body.
I reached out and placed my hand on the small spot of metal surface of the desk and tapped it. The tension in the room broke slightly as the guys focused on me.
“There’s nothing we can do about it right now. We know someone is watching Rhett.” I forced the words out. “And we know they’re probably dangerous. That doesn’t really change from what’s been going on in the academy, but now we aren’t unaware of this person. It’s nobody’s fault, and I’ll be fine. I’ll stay with one of you at all times.”
“That’s not all.” Rowan’s voice rumbled down my spine.
“What do you mean?”
The distress was palpable in the air.
