“We will.”
“And what if it’s too much for me to handle? Not that I think anything you give me could be, but what if it is?”
“Then you can use a safeword,” he says without another beat.
“Can it . . . can it be anything?” I lick the roof of my mouth.
“Sí. Anything. Preferably something you don’t like very much.”
I thrum my fingers against the water, pushing back against him when his hot mouth touches the skin of my neck at the same time as the sweep of cool air. “Mayonnaise.”
He stifles a laugh. “Don’t like the stuff, huh?”
I scrunch my nose. “No. Not at all. Travis used to put it in my sandwiches and burgers no matter how much I asked him not to. He knew I hated it and would keep jars of it in the house anyway. It was like he was trying to change my mind on what he thought was a small thing to try to prepare me for something bigger.”
“The guy’s an idiot. If you don’t like something, then you don’t, and I’ll never try to make you. I also happen to hate mayonnaise, so you definitely don’t have to worry about me ever buying or using it.”
I snort. “It’s awful stuff.”
“That it is. How about we use mayo instead? It’ll be easier to say.”
“Mayo,” I say, testing the word as my lips slowly rub together. “Yeah, that probably would be better. You do have a tendency to make me forget how to breathe.”
He chuckles. “Not always a bad thing, and I forget to do a lot when you’re around.”
“Like?”
He sighs. “That I really, really shouldn’t stay here again, and why it’s such a bad idea.”
“What is it you think you’ll do?”
“I . . . I don’t know. I was told—”
I press my fingers to his lips. “You were told you were dangerous and I was told I wasn’t enough. How about we figure out the truth for ourselves?”
“You’re right. We should do that. And I already know the truth when it comes to you. You’re more than enough. After being with you, I don’t think anyone else ever could be, though.”
My lips tilt. “I can’t even picture myself with anyone else. I don’t want to.”
“Me neither. I want to be the only one consuming your thoughts. The same way you do mine.”
“All of them?”
“Every last one.”
I rub my cheek against his and his lips roll over mine. “Then you’ll need to keep spending the night with me, so I don’t have the chance to think about much else.”
“For how long?” His voice wavers.
“For however long you want us to keep thinking about each other.”
“You do realize that might lead to me kidnapping you and taking you back to my place on the days I can’t stay at your place, right?”
“I was counting on it.” His lips press tightly to mine, his tongue slowly invading my mouth while his body tightens against me. I jerk forward when a light voltage shoots through me, and I’m held hostage by the earthquake inside my body.
“Yeah, no way you’re not enough. You’re fucking everything.” His teeth nibble at my ear and the vibration stops. My body twitches, and I gasp when he drags the cold glass of water he set on the tray next to us across my chest.
The ice swishes in the liquid and he gulps with each swallow, the cubes clinking against his teeth. It’s not until a sharp coldness comes in contact with my neck, causing my brain to short circuit, that I realize he’s using his mouth to trail the ice over my skin, and I thrash against him. Then the heat of the water intertwines with the cold, fighting for dominance and pulling me in two different directions.
