“You’re smiling, though,” Buck added, looking confused. “I can’t remember seeing you smile before.”

“Who’s smiling?” Chief Bibb said, stepping out of his office with glasses perched on his nose.

“Markland,” Buck replied.

“Indeed, he is,” Chief Bibb mused. “That’s odd.”

“What’s odd?” Maria Salazar said, walking into the room. “Sorry, I’m late, Chief. The traffic was a nightmare.”

“Can you all just stop?” I growled, ignoring Jordan’s self-satisfied grin. “I’m not fucking smiling.”

“You kind of are,” Maria said, chuckling. “Hi, Adam. I was hoping to run into you.”

I glanced at Jordan, and lo and behold. Little shit wasn’t smiling anymore.

“Hey, Maria,” I said, shifting my gaze to her. “Is everything okay?”

“I just wanted to catch up. How about a drink and a chat?”

“He can’t,” Jordan cut in. “John Smith is expecting us. Remember, Markland?”

Actually, I couldn’t remember, because he just made it up.

“Sorry, Maria, duty calls,” I muttered, rubbing my forehead. “One of these days, I promise.”

“Maybe,” Jordan added coolly, walking past me. “We have a very busy schedule.”

“You two!” Chief Bibb exclaimed. “Take that fucking day off. You both look as if you haven’t slept all night.”

When Maddox burst into laughter, I flipped him off instead of punching him. He was lucky I had bigger fish to fry.

I kept my silence until we reached the car before looking at Jordan pointedly.

“Can you now tell me where we’re really going?”

“I didn’t think that far ahead,” he deadpanned, pushing his sunglasses up his nose.

I grinned because I had an idea.

“How about I buy you a cup of coffee, and you tell me what your zodiac sign is?” I suggested, walking up to him.

Jordan frowned in confusion. “I didn’t know you were into astrology.”

“Well, I didn’t know I was into dick either, but here I am.”

I opened the door for him, but he still just stood there, agape.

“What will it be, princess?” I said, pointing at the passenger seat. “Are you in or out?”

“I’m in,” Jordan finally said, flashing me with a wide smile. “I’m also an Aries.”

Half an hour later, we were sitting in a booth at Pete’s. It was still early, so the place was mostly empty, but we picked a solitary booth in the corner just in case.

“So, what’s up?” Jordan said, looking nervous, as if he expected to hear bad news from me.

“I have great news,” I informed him.

“And those are?”
