“I’m guessing we’re talking about Jordan?”
“Yeah. We… um… we spent the night together. We didn’t have sex, not the real kind at least, but it was the best night of my life.”
Verna sniffled. “I’m so glad for you, hun.”
I frowned. “Are you crying?”
“A little. Love stories always make me cry.”
“Oh… um... It’s not exactly a love story.”
“It doesn’t matter what we call it. You’ve taken a step in the right direction, hun. That’s what counts.”
“You were right, though,” I mused. “I never hated him, Vern. It was more like an obsession. Can you imagine that?”
“I have such a good feeling about this, Adam. You should give it a chance.”
“It’s still complicated with us working together, but maybe we can figure it out.”
“I’m sure you can. Love conquers all, and all that.”
“It’s not love, Vern.”
“Whatever you want to call it, hun.”
“Anyway… I have to go now. Charge this to my credit card, will you?”
“This one is on the house, hun. You just made my day.”
Fuck, I was happy. For the first time in my life, maybe. No wonder I came to work with a grin on my face and forgot to wipe it off before entering the headquarters.
“What’s wrong with your face?” Buck asked me as soon as I walked into the office.
“Nothing. What do you mean?”
“Are you smiling?”
I snorted. “Of course not. Why would I be…”
When Jordan came out of the kitchenette, I forgot to finish the sentence. He froze on the spot when he spotted me, looking unsure of what to do next.
“Hey,” he said, wide-eyed and pale.
“Hey,” I said, trying to sound normal.
His gaze slid down my body, betraying him for a moment. It lingered a tad too long in certain places, making me grin. When I winked at him, his face turned crimson, but his relief was evident. He rewarded me with a wide smile before looking over my shoulder and sobering up. I turned, only to see Maddox and his presumptuous smirk.
“Well, hello,” he said, playing with his pen. “And congratulations.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I snapped.
His royal madness was getting on my nerves. Again.
He shrugged. “Nothing. What do you think it means?”
“I think it means you don’t like having a perfect set of teeth.”
Maddox raised his hands. “Hey, I was just joking.”
