She fluttered her hand in the air. “I may have fainted. But I don’t faint, for goodness’ sake.”

“You fell,” Seth retorted, his jaw hard. “You were unconscious for a good minute.”

Erik winced. This day could not get any worse, although having the new shifter in the room was increasing his blood pressure for some reason. “Was this in front of the FBI?”

Seth nodded grimly.

“Please tell me you didn’t kill an FBI agent to get her out of there,” Erik said. That was the last thing he needed. He was more than dedicated to being his brother’s Enforcer, but he really didn’t want to take on the entire FBI.

“I said I was taking her to the hospital.” Seth shrugged. “I lied.”

Mia’s phone buzzed.

“That’s probably him again.” Seth’s growl was out in full force. “Would you please handle it?”

Mia hissed impressively and yanked her phone from her back pocket to bring it to her ear. “Stone,” she snapped. She paused and then rolled her eyes. “Yes, Kurt, I’m fine. I’m meeting with a doctor now. Thank you for your concern, but I’m absolutely fine. I didn’t eat breakfast. My blood sugar was low. I’ll call you after I speak with the doctor.” She clicked off. “There. Are you happy?”

“No,” Seth said. “I’m not happy at all.”

Erik kept an eye on Luna as she watched the exchange with rapt fascination. Erik cleared his throat. “Luna McElhanney, I’d like you to meet our Alpha, Seth Volk, and his mate, Mia Stone.”

Mia frowned. “Please tell me you didn’t just kidnap this young woman.”

“He did,” Luna interjected. “The jackass.”

Mia nodded vigorously. “Oh, yeah, believe me, I get it. Jackass runs in the family.”

She wasn’t reading Seth right if she thought he was unaffected by that. His brother had always had a temper. While he’d never hurt Mia, he might go break a tree or two.

Erik cleared his throat. “Listen, I don’t want to be the voice of reason here, but I will be if left with no other alternative. Mia, something’s going on with you. Luna, you’re the only wolf shifter we could find who has any scientific knowledge or background. Can you help?”

Luna’s expression softened. “You’re feeling ill?” she questioned. “You really passed out?” Her voice was soft and her brow furrowed.

Mia sighed. “Yes. We mated weeks ago, and instead of getting stronger, I seem to be getting weaker. We don’t know why.”

Luna looked around the room, shrugged her shoulders, and then leaped for the window.

Mia watchedas the turquoise-eyed shifter jumped toward the window. Erik almost casually slipped out an arm and caught her around the midsection, easily lifting her into the air. She gave him an impressive kick to his knee, but he didn’t so much as twist.

Mia stood. “Let her go, Erik. Now.”

Erik looked at his brother.

Mia looked at Seth, as well. This was unbelievable. They had to follow some rules. “You can’t be serious here. She doesn’t want to be here. Let her go.”

“Yeah, let me go.” Luna kicked Erik in the thigh again.

“Damn it,” he muttered. “That’s your last kick. Knock it off.”

The woman’s gaze met Mia’s. “Hey, you seem like a nice person and all, but I’m not going to let them kill me.”

Mia blinked. What a freaking odd world she’d entered. Even though Luna seemed sassy, definite fear lurked in her eyes. “Nobody’s going to kill you.”

“Ha,” Luna said. “I’ve been kidnapped by your pack. That means war.”

Erik still held the young woman aloft with one arm banded around her entire waist. “We’re not going to kill you.” He rolled his eyes. “We just want your help.”

“Uh-huh,” Luna argued. “I know better. I know how these things work. There’s no way to take me back under the radar. My entire pack is looking for me right now, and we’re ready for war.” Red flushed her cheekbones.
