Gabe watched his phone, his breath caught. Seen.Jesus…Waiting… someone typing.
-Gabe?
His heart burst and he typed back, frantic.
-Yes where are you?
-in New Haven. You?
-still at headquarters.
-coming to get you
Gabe’s eyes welled up, and his hand shook. Watching the phone buzz, light up. Call. He swiped that green phone, almost fainting at his voice.
“Gabe?”
“Yes…”
A deep sigh. His voice choked a bit. “Fuck. I’m coming to get you. Where are you staying?”
“You haven’t forgotten me…”
A split second of silence. “What?”
“You…” He couldn’t talk, his tears pearling down his face.
“Of course not! Gabe…. The address?”
He told him, the name of the hotel and the address. “When?”
“I need to get the jet, but today, maybe late. Your room?”
“232. Damian… hurry…”
“I will. I’ll see you soon.” Gabe just breathed, trying to find something to say, that relief choking him. Almost melting at his words. “I love you, ok? I will never let you go.”
He sobbed, pushing his hand on his mouth. “Ok… ok…”
“I’ll be there soon.”
Damian cut the call and called Harold. “I need the jet today.”
“Fuck that. We have a board meeting tomorrow…”
“Harold… I am still asking nicely.”
“Alright… but you better be back soon.”
He cut the call, smiling at Cassie. “Care for a trip with the jet?”
“Ooooh. Sweet!”
“Let’s go and grab your bag, then it’s off to the airport.”
That trip, like a dream, trying not to think of his fear when they took off, clinging to the armrest, flying with all his senses alert close to a nightmare, but this was for Gabe. Cassie had a great time emptying the fridge and finding all sorts of secret stashes Harold had, sweets and chocolates hidden in various places.
Landing late at night, Damian called the hotel from the cab to book a suite on the top floor, with a separate smaller one for Cassie, which was adjacent to theirs. That slight impatience in him, his heart racing. Straight to the reception counter when they had arrived, getting the cards, taking the elevator, but he stopped it on Gabe’s floor.
