Chapter 8

A Strange Woman

Gale Fears

When Daniel had said that night would be filled with fun, this was certainly not what I was expecting.

I looked at the girl on the floor, half passed out after throwing up on my shoes.

“What the hell?” Daniel shouted. “Someone needs to get rid of her! People shouldn’t drink if they can’t hold it.”

“Relax,” I said, kneeling down next to her. “Excuse me, Miss, are you okay?”

I snapped my fingers at her, and she groaned loudly.

“Where are her friends?” I asked. “She can’t be here alone.”

We looked around for some sign of her friends but couldn’t find anyone in the crowd. She might have thrown a drink at me and thrown up on my brand new shoes, but I couldn’t just leave her lying there. I thought about calling the bouncer, but there was just something about her that pulled me. Maybe it was the curiosity of why she had thrown her drink on me, or maybe it was something else.

“We can’t leave her like this,” I said, picking her up. “We need to get her somewhere safe.”

“Safe? Where is safe? We don’t even know where she lives,” Daniel said, looking at her apprehensively.

“I can’t just leave her here,” I insisted. “I’ll take her back to my place, and keep her there for the night. She can leave in the morning.”

“This is ridiculous,” Daniel said, rubbing his eyes. “You can’t just take a random drunk woman home.”

I looked at her thoughtfully, trying to figure out what to do. She looked so weak and vulnerable, lying there on the couch I had put her on. I knew I could just leave her there, but my conscience would keep bothering me.

“I’ll take her to my place,” I said, sighing. “She’ll be safe there. I don’t want to leave her lying there, surrounded by drunk men, and unable to defend herself.”

“You can’t be serious,” Daniel said. “It was supposed to be a boy’s night out! The rest are already on their way!”

I picked her up and said, “You guys enjoy. I’ll come back once I get her somewhere safe.”

I carried her out the door ignoring the look he was giving me and headed towards my car. I placed her on the passenger seat, buckled her up, and got in the driver seat.

“Where am I?” she groaned.

“In my car,” I replied, starting it up. “Can you tell me where you live so I can take you home?”

“Hah! As if!” she snapped, rubbing her head. “You think I’ll tell you where I live? What if you’re some serial killer, huh?”

I looked at her, amused.

“If I am one, then you are already in trouble,” I said. “Giving me your address will not help your predicament.”

“I’m not stupid!” she slurred. “I know you want to kidnap Erica too! I won’t let you!”

“Who’s Erica?” I asked.

“My friend,” she mumbled. “She’s the one who set me up on the date with stupid Kyle.”

“What did Kyle do that offended you so much?” I asked, enjoying her company. She hadn’t recognized me, and I was reveling in the anonymity for once.

“He stood me up! And then I saw him at the club, and I threw a drink at him! That will show him!” she said.

“You threw it at me,” I said, frowning.
