Pix glides forward in a way that completely doesn’t look like him at all . His voice is changed with an electronic device, so when he speaks, he sounds robotic.

“Are you serial killer Vengeance?”

Vale pauses, and he looks around the room, scanning our masks one by one. I know he can’t recognize me, but he seems to. He stares at me. Intent, dangerous.

He walks towards us and past everyone until he’s standing in front of me. The pack follows. My mouth is dry and my heart hammering in my chest.

“Yes, we are.”

Triumph fills me.

“I am Unknown,” I whisper. I reach up and pull off my mask, letting it drop to the floor.

“Precision,” Pix says and yanks off his mask.

My dad pulls off his, and my mum smiles.

“I am the original serial killer Unknown,” she says with a wide smile. “Then Mitchel joined me.”

Sariah removes her mask, but no one can see her face. “I am Fury.”

My pack turns, scanning the killers that surround them. They relax and smile.

“Welcome to the Rest in Pieces Alpha Association.”

“The what?” Cyn asks, mildly horrified.

“We were rejected by our alphas. Well, everyone except Meg. Desi didn’t have a chance to reject her before she bit and bonded him,” Pix says. “She’s like a little rat-dog.”

Meg gasps. “I resent that.”

“I don’t care.”

“Stop squabbling,” Dad grumbles.

“Dad rejected Mum.”

Dad grumbles again. “Can we stop bringing that up? I made a mistake.”

Kota is staring at Pix.

“I hadn’t been rejected until yesterday. But don’t you feel bad for me. I’m going to ruin his life. Welcome to the club, Alphas. If you hurt her, we’ll all be gunning for you.”

With that, Pix stalks out of the house. I’m worried about him, but I know he won’t let me close when he’s hurting. Pix’s life has been one nightmare after another. It wasn’t good until I brought him home. Dad gave him the power to defend himself. I gave him unconditional friendship and love. My mum gave him a family.

But I remember how it felt.

I’ll talk to him, just not yet.

Meg bounces up to Vale. “Welcome to the club, dildos.”

Vale smiles. “Meg, you get more charming every time we meet.”

“I’m like a fungus. I’ll grow on you, and then you’ll be like ‘when did she start living on our couch’, and I will just smile at you and wink, and you can just throw food at me and-”

“Where am I in all this?” Desi asks.

“Oh, you are a fungus right beside me.”
