The cookies are a nice touch, but my mother is the sweetest omega to ever walk the Earth, but, like my dad, she can be damn scary when riled.
And she’s on her way to being riled. I can tell because the cookies are her burnt-butter ones, the cookies she reserves for unwelcome guests.
“Oh, look, it’s our dildos.”
I choke and give Meg a sharp elbow in her ribs.
“Hello, dildos.”
“Meg!” My mother shakes her head and laughs, but the tension from whatever was growing disappears.
They ignore Meg, staring at me with an intensity that has me shifting my weight; all my father’s instructions have vanished. I’m not the killer he created, I’m just an omega, staring at my alphas and wondering how life could suddenly get so great.
“Bonnie,” Cyn says my name softly, and my mother jerks her head towards him in surprise. For a second, she’s startled, and then she smiles wide, and I know with that one word, my mother is sold, which means that any attempts my father might make to off my offending alphas will fail.
He would never risk her wrath.
Neither would I.
“Come on, Bonnie, bring your guests round the back, we’re having barbecue.”
“Ooh, what meat are we eating?” Meg purrs.
“The boring kind. If you want to eat spicy meat, go home and see your sweet and sexy little alpha.”
I cringe, wishing for a hole to open up, but it never does. My family needs to learn boundaries.
My mother is dressed in a skirt to her ankles, stockings, and shoes with pointy heels; she’s got a blouse that covers her up to her bond mark on her neck, and a face that’s tastefully made up. She is a perfectly done-up omega and wouldn’t dare leave the house looking anything but less than her best. It’s a whole thingwith her, but she does come across as somewhat prudish, so listening to these conversations is always a bit of a surprise for people.
My alphas seem to be taking it in their stride, though; the only person who looks surprised is Dakota, and it’s more happy surprise. The wonder on his face is something that I don’t like the looks of.
“Are you telling me that it’s not cutesy pick-up lines that will win our lovely Bonnie over, but crude and sexy words?” he purrs.
I bite my cheek, stopping myself from protesting as I follow them all around the side of the house.
Izzy sits up when she sees them, her eyes going wide before they narrow dangerously.
“Roscoe, get them.”
“Fuck!” I spit out before I jump into action, lunging to meet the giant mutt. He stands as tall as I do, or taller, it’s hard to tell because he weighs a ton, and I always struggle to stay upright with him leaning on me like this, but I’ve stopped the initial charge, which allows Dad to see what’s happening.
When nothing happens, I peer past the fur and snapping teeth at Dad.
“Dad-”
The dog is ripped off me, out of my hands, and three alphas tie it up with leads, holding poor Roscoe in the middle, unable to lunge at anyone.
My dad lets out a booming laugh as I register the warmth at my back. I tilt my head and find Vale. He leans down and presses a kiss to my temple.
“Well done. First test passed.”
I don’t even know what to say to that. “DAD! You promised.”
“I promised I would not attempt to test them. The rest of our family, no such promises. Next time, you’ll think more carefully about the deals you make.”
“A test? That’s a full-grown monster!” Cyn snarls.
“It’s a puppy,” Izzy coos and kneels in front of the dog, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Points for not hurting him because, if you had, I would have had to stab your balls off.”
