Memphis, it took some time for me to see things clearly, but I know what I want.

And now that you know all of this, it’s time to tell me what you want, since I’ve been making assumptions this whole time.

The plans I stated above can be changed; they hinge on you and your decision.

If you’re relieved to be out of this potentially difficult situation involving a single mom, a young child, an ex-spouse, and possible step-parenting down the road, I won’t be angry with you. I’ll be hurt, I’ll be sad, but I’ll understand.

But if I was wrong, if you really would like to give this another try, meet me at our haystack Tuesday night at 8 pm. (You know the haystack I’m talking about.)

I’ll be waiting.

Ty

Yes, Memphis knew the one she was talking about. It was the spot where they first said they loved one another. Ty had been waiting there last night?

Panic and pain. That’s all Memphis could feel in that moment.

She’d waited for him…and he hadn’t shown.

In a blur of desperation, Memphis bolted from the room to find Emmitt and Maverick at the kitchen bar.

“What did it say?” Emmitt asked.

The words came out in a rush as he tried to relay Ty’s message starting from the beginning. But before he could even get to the worst part, an idea came to mind. He shot a look at the glowing green numbers on the microwave: 4:49.

“I’ve got to hurry,” Memphis breathed.

“Hurry where?” Maverick asked.

“The airport. Ty said that if I still wanted to work on things, I should meet her at the haystack.”

Emmitt tossed his hands up. “What? When?”

“Last night,” Maverick answered for him, proving he’d read the note himself.

“Dude!”Emmitt sucked air in through his clenched teeth. “Nobueno.”

“She said if I didn’t show, she and Lucas were heading to Boston for Thanksgiving and Lucas would have lunch with his bio father, but I’m afraid she’s really going down there to consider moving back. I can’t let that happen. Dang, I wish I still had that Camaro right now.”

“The what?”

Memphis shook his head. “I need to freaking teleport to the airport or Ty’s going to be gone. Her flight leaves at six, which means they’re probably going to board any minute.”

“We better get moving,” Maverick said, popping out of his chair and hurrying toward the front door.

“What do you meanwe? And there’s no way—the airport’s over an hour away.”

“Oh, there’s a way, alright.” Emmitt made a show of stroking his jaw, a pleased expression on his face. “Want to take a ride in my chopper, baby?” Emmitt might have been saving that cheesy pickup line for some hot babe that crossed his path down the road, but Memphis couldn’t imagine a better offer.

A rush of hope and relief rushed in. “Oh, man, you’re a lifesaver! Yes, let’s go!”
