Chapter 28

“You’re in so much trouble,” Andie snapped through the speaker of Emmitt’s phone.

Emmitt, who’d shoved the phone in Memphis’s face the minute he’d stepped through the front door, shot him a look. “See? I told you.”

And he had. Right as he pushed the phone toward him.

“I needed time to think, Andie. I’m here in time for Thanksgiving. And I can…bring whatever you need me to.”

“I don’t need you to bring anything. Mabel and Don prepped it all before they left. I’ve been worried sick about you this whole time. We all have.”

Maverick wandered into the entry room, his gaze fixed on the floor as he paced back and forth. Memphis recognized his twin’s wounded posture. The drooped shoulders. Dropped chin. And the impossible-to-miss sighs that pushed through his down-turned lips.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “Ididcheck in.”

“Yes, but you didn’t give me a chance to talk to you in return. There have been some…developments regarding a certain someone.”

Her words were a drop kick to Memphis’s heart. “I was hoping toavoiddevelopments regarding a certain someone.”

“Yeah, well, you can’t run forever. Ty’s been trying to get ahold of you. She said she tried calling, texting, leaving voice mails. I explained that your phone was messed up, so she brought a letter for me to give to you.”

Forget about the heart kick. This felt more like jolts of electric shock.

He gulped. “Where is it?”

“In your room. It wasn’t sealed, so I can’t guarantee that Emmitt and Maverick haven’t already read it. But I can assure you thatIhaven’t.”

Memphis shot a look to Emmitt, who’s eyes darted away from him and veered up to the ceiling. Maverick still paced in the background.

“Okay, I’ll go read it. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. And Memphis?”

“Yeah?”

“I hope you get them back. Both of them, TyandLucas.”

That wasn’t likely to happen. Andie didn’t understand that nice guys like him got apology letters, not love letters.Sorry I had to end it. You’re such a nice guy and everything, but…Fill in that blank with anything involving a careless playboy who used and abused women without a second thought.

“Thanks,” he said anyway. “Talk to you later.”

Emmitt tossed his arms around him. “Go get your letter, man.”

Memphis returned the embrace and patted his back.

“Yeah,” came Maverick, still in pout mode as he moved toward them. “Forget about me and go get your note.”

Memphis shook his head and tossed his arm around the guy once he was within reach. “I’m going in. I’ll come out of my room when I can breathe again.”

“Good luck,” Emmitt said. And though he didn’t add it, Memphis could almost hear the words that often followed such a sentiment. You’re going to need it.

Memphis stared at the handwritten note, shocked by all that he had read. Not only had Tynotknown Eric was coming into town, she hadn’t even known she was massaging the guy’s back until he spun around.

The letter offered one surprising insight after the next. Like the fact that she feared Memphis was looking for a way out after the whole mess at the park. But the part at the very bottom of the note is what made Memphis’s jaw drop.

So now that you have all of the facts, I’m leaving the ball in your court. Or in your terms, the car in your lane.

Lucas and I plan to catch a 6:00 flight to Boston on Wednesday to have Thanksgiving with my parents. While we’re there, I’ll tell Lucas that Eric is his dad, and the two will meet up over lunch with me present. I’ve given Andie my two weeks. She found a backup LMT, but she assures me that the job is still mine if I should change my mind, as she’d like to bring on a second massage therapist regardless. Your sister is a saint, because she also assures me that the suite she reserved for me and Lucas is still ours if we chose to take it.
