Chapter Ten

Two hours of surveillance footage later, Connor still hadn’t found what he was looking for. Of all the cameras in the area, one of them had to have captured the crime on video. He closed out that download and moved on to the next clip.

Still nothing.

He needed a break, couldn’t only sit still for so long without going stir-crazy. Leaving his office, he walked down the hall to the breakroom. The coffeepot was empty, and he couldn’t find the ground to make more.

Moving on, he went to the meeting room. Score. A full pot that recently finished brewing by the heavy scent of java wafting through the air. He filled his cup added a teaspoon of sugar, the bare amount to take the bite off the cheap coffee the department used.

Jake stopped him as he walked back to his office, waving a paper in the air. “I got it.”

“The warrant?”

“Judge Warfield signed off on it minutes ago. We’re good to go.” A broad smile stretched across Jake’s face. “I’m grabbing Tanner then it’s time to roll.”

“I’m coming with you.”

Jake eyed him “Sure that’s a good idea? You’ve gotten pretty close to that girl who works at the shelter the last few weeks. I know this case has become personal for you, and I don’t want it to interfere with your judgement.”

“Give me some credit, Jake. I can keep a cool head.”

The head narcotics detective didn’t answer right away. He looked Connor up and down. “All right, but Tanner and I will take the lead. You’ll be our backup.”

In full professional mode, Connor set all thoughts of Tiffany aside. Her connection with the shelter wasn’t the only reason he wanted this case solved. “Leaving now?”

“As soon as I grab Tanner. Someone in the court has been leaking information but we don’t know who. I’m not risking this getting out and Michaels skipping out.”

“Have you set eyes on him?”

“Our intel places him operating at the old warehouse down on second, but he’s been staying at a house on Weaver. I took a detour down Weaver on my way from the courthouse and didn’t see the car.”

“Warehouse first?”

“I’m waiting on a call from Merrick. That’s his patrol area, and as soon as I get confirmation of the vehicle, we’re heading out.”

“And if you don’t?”

Jake shot him a determined glare. “We’ll find him. By tonight, there will be one less dealer on the streets.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“We leave in five.”

“I’ll be ready.” Connor went to his office and shut down his work. He checked his holster, patted the bulletproof vest under his uniform.

Most warrants served were uneventful.

A few were not.

He’d be prepared, should anything go down.

He was jogging to his unit when Jake came up to him. “Michaels is back at the house on Weaver, and Akons is with him. They’re a dangerous duo.”

“Is Tanner on his way?”

“Tanner’s riding with me. Slight change of plans. Golden’s coming too, and you’ll both take perimeter.”

“Got it.” Adrenaline kicked in. Connor focused on all his training that had prepared him for these moments.
