“Yes,” I lied, since the question was complicated.

“Do you know anyone who might want to harm the baby, Mr. Romney?”

I talked about Snakebite and the Sons of Satan MC in general. They didn’t seem to be interested.

“Anyone else, John,” the woman pressed. “Sometimes it can be someone you least expect.”

Then against my better judgement, I mentioned Anarchy. “I don’t think she wanted to harm him, but I’m about sure she helped the kidnappers, Jessy Bell and Teeth. Her sister Freedom was in on it, too. Halley’s brother said she’d distracted him.”

The man asked me, “Why would this Anarchy do such a thing?”

“She’s my ex.”

The woman mentioned to him, “The pregnant one.”

“No, that’s not her, that’s the sister, Freedom.”

The man opened a file, which I assumed was notes from questioning Halley. He flipped through it, reading. “Do you think Halley is a liar, Mr. Romney?”

“No.”

“Has she ever told you a lie?”

“I don’t believe so.”

“Has she told you about her conversation with this Anarchy. I assume that isn’t her real name.”

“It is,” the woman remarked, thumbing through another file.

“Halley hasn’t mentioned anything about a conversation with Anarchy to me.”

“Mr. Romney, the woman you claim could’ve been behind this told Halley she was pregnant with your child.”

“Say what? No way.”

The man got on his radio. “Can we get a team in Arizona to pick up this Anarchy woman?”

“Roger that,” came back through.

Fuck. Scar was gonna skin me alive. Anarchy, pregnant and Halley knowing about it. What the fuck was I going to do?

Halley

With Cowboy gone being questioned, it was just Snakebite and me. We smoked a cigarette outside my room.

“Heard the Feds couldn’t find you for questioning.”

“Yeah, I’m staying somewhere else. I can’t get too close to the heat.”

“I heard. They say you killed some broad in San Diego.”

“What of it?”

“Never thought you had it in you. The killing. You didn’t have the raping in you like your brothers and father did.”

“I didn’t mean to. The old woman got caught in the crossfire. Believe me, it’s haunted me.”

“Whatever.”
