Deke nodded.“We got the other one and he is dead too.We didn’t mean to kill the man.We needed him for info.”He looked over at Sam.
Sam shook his head.“I had no choice, son.He came at me and I shot him.“
“He only had a knife,” Mountain commented as he shook his head.
“Only...”Sam spluttered.“Well, I’m not a mountain...Mountain.”He scoffed.“I’m not made of fucking rock like you are apparently.A knife can hurt me, ya know. So, I did shoot him before he could reach me.”
James nodded at Sam, “I get it...one of the bastards found us.He tried to take us out before we could fight back.He ambushed us with a bullet but Bane’s instinct gave us the upper hand.He shot the large fucker almost before he knew he was there. Then he went over to talk to him.”
Deke swung his gaze over to Bane and asked, “Did you know who he was?”
Bane shook his head.“Not at first.I tried talking to him and never got a name but he did tell me one thing.Owens isn’t the one who hired him, neither was Charlie.Neither one of them has the money to hire this group, but there is another man that does.”
Shay groaned as he tried to open his eyes.
All the men in the room looked over at him.
Shay tried to shift in the bed as he grimaced. He laid still for a moment then he slowly opened his eyes.He groaned in pain while closing his eyes tightly. After another moment or two, he tried again and this time he was able to keep them open.
Bane, James, Hound, Sam, Deke and Mountain were standing around the bed while looking back at him.
With another groan, Shay asked, “Man, I’m dead aren’t I?In my coffin at the funeral.”
Bane actually smiled.“No heaven’s gates, Montross?”
Shay scoffed.“I see you and Sam standing here, so I damn well knew it wasn’t heaven.”
They all laughed...even Sam.
Chapter Five
Shay groaned again.“So did you get the license plate of the truck that hit me?”he whispered. Then his eyes widened as he asked, “Where’s Pappy? He was with me, is he still alive?”
“Yeah Shay, I ain’t dead yet,” Stone grumbled from the other bed.“I almost bit the big one as we used to say in the 80’s.But the bastards didn’t win this round.”
Shay slowly turned his head and saw Stone lying on the other bed.“Thank God.”
