Stone studied him then he shook his head.“You know who did this, don’t you?”

Bane nodded then reached his hand out.“Yeah Stone, I know who did this but we might be in a world of hurt if we don’t get out of these woods soon.”He hefted Stone up and over his shoulder in one slick move.

Stone grunted when his torso hit Bane’s shoulder.

James took out his cell with his free hand and was already telling Sam and the others to meet them at Bane’s house. That Bane was recalling everyone. He then abruptly ended the call as he was still carrying Shay.

When they made their way back to the vehicle, Bane flopped Stone down onto the back seat.

“Ooof!”Stone lost all his air.“Take it easy there, man.”

Bane ignored him as his focus was to get them to safety.

James put Shay down carefully and secured him in the seatbelt.

They got back on the road. After a few minutes, the other vehicles the Sins had taken were following them.

It took them an hour to get back to Bane’s mansion.

When the gate closed behind them, Sam, Deke, Mountain and Hound, all helped get the two injured men inside.

Bane ignored everyone as he stepped to the side and made a phone call.

The injured men were laid on the sofas.Stone groaned in pain a few times but didn’t speak.Shay hadn’t woken up.

Soon, another vehicle drove up to the gate.Bane saw this on the monitor by the table and he flicked the remote switch. The car rolled in and Bane closed the gate again.

After a couple of minutes, Bane opened the door and introduced the man joining them inside asDoc.

Sam frowned and asked, “Who did you say this was?”

Bane looked over at Sam and replied, “This is Dr.Badliss.He’s here to see Shay and Stone. But we can’t do it here, we have to go to the infirmary.”

Mountain leaned down and threw Shay over his shoulder.

Hound and Deke hoisted Stone up and carried him down the hall, following Bane and the doctor.

Bane opened one of the doors with a key.

When they walked inside, they found themselves in a well-supplied Infirmary room with two beds.Mountain carefully laid Shay in one bed while Hound and Deke set Stone down in the other bed.

Dr.Badliss glanced at Bane and asked how long Shay had been unconscious.

Bane told them his copter went down a couple of hours ago and he hadn’t woken up yet.

The doctor nodded then began examining him.He carefully ran his hands over the back of Shay’s head. When he pulled his fingers away they were stained with blood, it was already drying. The doc just shook his head and probed some more.He looked up at Bane and said, “The blow he took to the head is why he’s unconscious and hopefully he’ll wake up soon. Not sure how bad it is.”

“He’s hardheaded,” Sam spoke up.‘He will make it, you’ll see.”

Most in the room knew Sam was upset about this whole event. He had served in the military with both Shay and Stone.

At one point a few minutes later, the doctor wrapped his stethoscope around his neck and said to the room in general, “Your friend is very lucky he’s still alive. That fall could have killed him.”

Stone groaned as he tried to shift his position.“Yeah, Shay’s copter had infrared and we saw the heat signature before they shot us down. His pilot went down as low as he could get when we saw the flash of the rocket. We dropped to that thick shrub and that’s what saved us.The pilot? Not so much.He went down with the copter. Then he died when it went up in flames from the explosion and hitting the ground. There was no saving his life.I tried and the heat from the explosion was too intense.Shay hit the ground hard.I twisted my foot and popped my shoulder out when I hit.It was all I could do to drag Shay under cover and move far enough away from him that I could watch over his body and keep the bastards off us.All I had to fight with was a handgun.”

Bane nodded, then told Pappy, “Sam got an alert shortly after you guys went down and I knew the area well enough to tell them where to start looking. They were looking for you somewhere in the scrub and the trees.I knew where to look because I have been everywhere on that land over the years. We could hear the gunshots but we ran across Shay first.”

Stone nodded and told his part, “The hitters were coming to finish us off but fortunately one of them was hit by the Sins. Then the other one ran into Bane, who found us first.”
