“I heard you mention to that girl… Uh…” Her name was lost to me.

“Xinyi.”

“Yeah, Iris’s girl.” I clicked my fingers together with a grin. “You just became a human servant?”

Jack glanced over her shoulder at me. “Uh, yeah. A few months ago.”

“And your master? Who are they? Are they here?”

She paused her unpacking to face me, hands on her hips. “You sure ask a lot of questions.”

“Just want to know who my competition is.” I let a playful grin out and a wink.

Her eyes rolled at my antics. “Alora is my mistress. No, she’s not here.”

Alora. I didn’t know that name. I’d have to ask Kyren about her later. Now, for the most important question.

“And you and her…?” I trailed off, wagging my brows.

Jack’s face turned a delicious color of red that went down her chest and disappeared beneath her shirt. It made me want to see how far down it went.

If I played this right, maybe I would get to one day.

“No,” she grumbled without looking me in the eye. “We’re not like that. It’s more a mother-daughter kind of relationship.”

I bobbed my head in understanding. Most human servants were close with their vampire masters. Some bonds were emotional, others sexually, and others, like Kyren and all, were both.

Still, it wasn’t unheard of for a master to leave their human servant here for a time. There were a couple others here that were given the same lot as Jack but, from what they told me, it was uncomfortable being so far away from their master, like a phantom limb was missing.

My lips pressed tight together, head cocked as I let another piece of the puzzle that was Jack fall into place.

“Is that all your questions, or can I get back to unpacking?” she rushed out, obviously uncomfortable with the conversation.

Exactly how sheltered was this girl? If the vibe she was giving off was any indication of her experience level, she was going to be in for quite a surprise once classes started.

“Actually…” I drew out wanting to spend more time talking to her. “How do you feel about Mexican?”

Chapter seven

Jack

Myfirstdayofclasses. I hadn’t been this nervous for something since the one time we hunters had to practice throwing blades at our partners. I’d been so afraid to hit them, I threw up right after.

Tate had already left before I woke up. Thankfully, he didn’t snore, and otherwise, he’d been the perfect gentleman. Nothing like the male hunters in the barracks at the Hunter’s Guild HQ, who were all fart jokes and sexual innuendos.

The first night had gone by relatively fast. Surprisingly, Tate didn’t try to hit on me the whole time, though he did through a few flirty lines at me here and there. The Mexican food was amazing, the best thing I’d ever had in my mouth.

When I said that out loud, Tate gave me a strange look but didn’t make a lewd comment like most of the hunters would have.

Finding out the tall dark playful werewolf was my roommate had been a shock to the system. Then it quickly turned to worry.

I had a mission, and a werewolf with boundary issues was not helpful to my cause. Tate had already started testing me on my cover story, and I’d never had to think on my feet so quickly.

Sure, throw me into the middle of a fight and I was good to go. Ask me to make up a whole new identity on the fly?

I was screwed.

Breakfast was available in the dining hall, but I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to eat anything until I got through my first class. I was supposed to meet the partner Antoine had mentioned today as well. I wasn’t sure which class they’d be teaching, but I just hoped that it was someone that would actually let me do my job and not hover around, making sure I didn’t go off mission.
