“I’m moving into position in the alley,”Syrus says. “No one is back here.”
“For now,” Maeve murmurs.
Taking that as the warning it is, Kyren and I stay close behind her as she strides quickly down the hall. Her pace only slows as she turns right again, where a man in a black suit stands at an exit.
“Where are you going, Genevieve?” he asks, grabbing her arm. “Are you two controlling her time?”
“Can’t fuck her without using the loo,” I say with a shrug, wondering if I can cut his fingers off without getting too much blood on Maeve. “She’s taking us there.”
“It’s two doors down on the left,” the guard grunts. “I’ll keep her with me. Maybe she can suck my dick if you take long enough.”
Humming low in my throat, I walk past Maeve before throat punching the dickhead. This is someone who really can’t read the room. Kyren pulls Maeve away as the guard chokes. The movement makes him move forward, allowing me to pull my knife and quietly finish the job by shoving his head down and stabbing him through the back of his neck.
Twisting the weapon hard, I smirk as he drops to his knees.
“Don’t play with your food,” Kyren mutters.
Removing my knife, I shove the guard back, happy to see no life in his eyes.
“Izzy,” I hiss. I hear a snap of a neck, and my lips curl in happiness. The bond tells me my omega is perfectly fine, though I can feel his stress levels increasing.
“I’m good.Let’s roll!”he responds.
Izzy running in heels is something I’ll never forget.
“You’re a menace,” I mutter. “Maeve, will an alarm sound if I open this?”
“Yes. We’ll need to be quick,” she says.
Pushing open the door, I kick the dead man out of the way and begin walking toward the SUV where Syrus is standing. He has his gun up, his eyes moving behind us.
“Down,” he barks out, and I yank Maeve to the ground. It’s freezing, but at least there isn’t snow on the ground here yet.
Syrus shoots behind us as someone shouts and follows us out into the alley, hissing as a bullet hits his shoulder.
“Fucker,” he grits out.
Kyren kicks the door shut with his foot, and we all scramble up toward Syrus.
“I’m fine,” he says, getting into the driver seat.
There’s no time to fight, so I bundle Maeve into the back seat before we’re peeling out.
“There shouldn’t have been anyone behind us,” Maeve breathes with wide eyes.
“I caught the eye of one of the guards after snapping Dylan’s neck,” Izzy groans. “I’m sorry, Syrus.”
“I think I have too much adrenaline in my body to really feel it yet,” he grumbles. “I’ll switch with someone as soon as we’re out of here. I’m pretty sure it’s a scratch.”
“You’re still an impossible ass,” Maeve says, her eyes wet. “I can’t believe you’re really here.”
“I am,” Syrus says, chuckling. “I’m sorry we couldn’t do more for the people still there. You were always our focus.”
“I know,” she counters. “It may be selfish, but I’m really glad you came for me. I haven’t been in the best mindset lately. The Blue Light is one of the worst places I’ve ever been. Maybe one day I can do more for other people.”
“That’s all you can do sometimes,” Izzy says, turning in the front seat to look at her. “It’s fucking cold, and these heels arekilling me. Harlan, grab the duffle bag in the trunk please? Let’s get into some real clothes, shall we?”
“Why are you so good at wearing those?” she asks, her lips twitching slightly.
