“I don’t think I’m that far quite yet. I’ll let you know if I need an intervention.”

She pulled her key from her purse and inserted it in the door. Before she opened it, he stole one last kiss—for today—then waited until she’d locked the door behind her before heading back to his car.

Yeah, her lips were definitely addicting. If it was up to him, he’d never look for a cure.

“Details. I need details.”

Carli hadn’t even gotten all the way into the kitchen before her roommate waved her hands in the air, her expression fierce. “What are you talking about?”

She’d only woken up a few minutes ago and needed coffee before her eyes would be open enough to see what Mercedes was saying. Typically, she didn’t put her processors on until after she’d showered. Seeing as today was Sunday, she might not even bother.

“Your first official date with the hot doctor. Don’t play dumb with me.”

“Make me coffee, and I might be persuaded to talk.”

Mercedes was up and pulling a coffee mug from the cupboard in seconds. Slipping a pod into the machine, she pressed the button to start the brew. In less than a minute, Carli had a steaming cup of happiness in front of her.

“I love you.” This was said after Mercedes put the milk and sugar on the table, and Carli fixed her morning wake-up exactly how she liked it. A splash of milk, lots of sugar.

Mercedes tucked her feet under her on the chair and leaned on the table. “Details. Now.”

After stalling with another sip, Carli lowered her cup. “We went to his parents’ house in Westover.”

Mercedes’ eyes narrowed and her lips pursed.

“It’s huge.”

Her friend’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “You saw it already?”

“The house. It’s a mansion.”

“The house. I want better details. About the doc and what you did.”

Taking her time with more hits of caffeine, Carli thought about exactly how much she’d tell Mercedes.

“I met his parents. And his old girlfriend.”

“His old girlfriend. Seriously? Why was she there? What’s she like?”

If Mercedes leaned any further on the table, she’d be horizontal.

“She’s an old friend of the family. Very old and very close according to her. She was also gorgeous and wore this slinky dress that made mine look like it came from the Salvation Army bins.” Yes, Blake had seemed to love her dress, but she’d bet he would say that about anything she wore. He was a good guy and had impeccable manners.

“How long since they broke up?”

Carli shrugged. “I have no idea. Blake said it was because he was in medical school and didn’t have the time or money for her.”

“She sounds like a real winner.”

“One that wants to win him back.”

“What? Did she say that?”

Carli told Mercedes what she’d seen and heard while in Priscilla’s vicinity and from across the room. The steam was almost visible rising from her friend’s ears.

“But he asked me out on a date again, so I guess she didn’t get her wish.”

“Unless he’s a cheater.”
