In a very quick, and slightly clumsy move, he straddled my lap and smashed his lips to mine. The kiss was excitement, lust, and eagerness all wrapped into one.

As soon as he came up for air, his cheeks were flushed, his smile wide, and he was hard as a rock.

“How about we take a shower and…” I lightly ran my finger over his shaft. “I’ll take care of that for you.”

I didn’t have to ask him twice. He was off like a shot toward my en suite.

The driveback to Brookridge was pleasant—no traffic, and Sam was nestled beside me the whole time. He told me about hisconversations with people at the gala and his favorite foods. He went on and on and oddly enough, it didn’t irritate me.

All too soon, we were pulling up to his apartment. “I had an amazing time, Lukas. Thank you so much.”

“As did I, Sam. Are you working tomorrow?”

“I am…why?” He smirked.

“What time are you finished?”

“I work from eight to eight tomorrow.”

My brows rose. “That’s a long shift.”

He shrugged. “I offered it when I took time off. I love working there, so it’s not a hardship for me.”

“Well, if you’re not too tired, I could pick you up and perhaps bring you to my place.”

“For the night?”

“Mmhmm.” I brushed his hair out of his face.

“I work the next day but at noon…okay!” He lunged, kissing me until he needed air.

“Then I shall see you tomorrow, Sam.” He went to leave, but I grabbed his hand. “I’m truly glad you came with me on this trip. I had a wonderful time as well.”

With one more kiss, he was out the door. He didn’t go upstairs—instead he went to the bookstore below. I remembered him telling me Maggie was caring for his cat, so that was likely why.

The car drove me to the dock and a few minutes later, I was headed toward Lancaster Island. Where I’d once loved my solitude, I found myself unsettled that I had no one waiting for me with a smile and an embrace. My staff didn’t count.

While they’d each hug me if I asked, I didn’t want another’s arms around me. Something deep inside me craved Sam…and that was enough to have me calling Vincent the moment I entered my bedroom.

“Lukas, I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon.”

“Vincent, I have a problem.”

He chuckled as if my frantic tone wasn’t an issue. “Is that so? Tell me what’s going on.”

I explained everything that had happened after the gala…omitting detailed descriptions. How my emotions were all over the place and the need to be with Sam was jarring.

When I finished Vincent hummed. “It’s not really a problem, Lukas.”

“How do you figure?”

“For hundreds of years you’ve been in a void. No joy, no purpose. Sam has given you a reason to exist. He made you feel things you either never have or haven’t in a long while.”

“We are sort of dating.”

He laughed, the bastard. “How cute.”

“Shut up, Vincent. He’s human; it’s their way.”
