“Uh, nothing…who are they?”
He followed my line of sight, and I didn’t miss the way his eyes narrowed. “They’re no one important.”
The woman in the middle smirked as if she’d heard him.
“Why are they staring at me?”
Lukas tugged me gently to the left so that I was in front of him and all I could see was his handsome face. “There, now you can’t see them anymore.”
“My hero.”
Once we were in the limo on our way back to the hotel, my stomach began to flutter with excitement. Could he feel the charge in the air? I wasn’t the type of person to just jump someone and kiss them, but the tightness of my skin, the itch of need on my lips, it was as though if I didn’t kiss this man, I’d die. Jesus, Natalie would think I was crazy.
“Did you have a good night?” Lukas asked.
“It was amazing. Thank you so much for inviting me.”
The corner of his mouth curled up, and in the moonlight his purple eyes gleamed like precious stones.
“You were a perfect date, Sam.”
I peered out the window, wondering how long it would be until we reached the hotel. Did I have time to devour his face before we got there? The answer arrived as we pulled into the hotel.
I followed him to the elevator, the pull to be close to him strong. One glance at Lukas, and it appeared he was unfazed. One-sided lust was bullshit.
When the doors opened and he stepped out, I once again followed him. If he went to his bedroom, I’d have to explain why I joined him there. He didn’t; instead he moved to the living room.
“Drink?” He motioned to the bar.
“Maybe just water, please.”
He nodded and went about pouring me water and himself red wine. He handed it to me and sat on one of the sofas. Instead of choosing a different one, I chose to take the spot beside him. He looked momentarily confused but covered it by sipping his wine.
“Soooo…what was up with the unsettling trio?”
He chuckled which was lovely. “They’re very old fashioned is all.”
I swallowed some of my water and placed the glass on the table. “Like old fashioned in they don’t agree with two men being on a date?”
He shook his head. “It’s complicated. No reason to worry yourself over any of it.”
“Okay. But who were they?”
“Stockholders.”
One-word answer…okay, he clearly didn’t want to talk about them.
“Were you able to eat anything this evening?”
“A bit.”
Why was it so hard to have a conversation with him tonight? This was my thing—I could talk to anyone. Of course, I didn’t want to lick every inch of other people’s skin like I did Lukas. Sex wasn’t something I’d had a lot of. Maybe twice in my life andboth times, it had been lackluster. I generally had a better time with my hand.
“Sam, are you all right?”
“Hmm?Oh, yeah, just thinking about the gala.” Just say it, Sam. “Lukas, I had a wonderful time. A dream come true.”
“Good.”
