“Everything’s fine. Eric is the head of my security team. I sent him a text after our run-in with William this morning. I wanted to make him aware of what’s going on since things have escalated.”

A security team?

He seems concerned about William, and I want to understand their background. “You have a security team? Is William dangerous?”

Pushing his plate to the side, he focuses on me. “Yes, I have a security team. My business is relatively safe, but there’s people who’ll do anything when enough money is involved.William isn’t the only one who’s shady. I don’t want to lie to you. I think he’s all talk, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.”

Mulling over what he’s said, I nod in understanding. “Thank you for being honest with me. What exactly does your security team do?”

“They oversee the guards that secure the build sites. They investigate potential clients to ensure they’re legitimate businessmen. Eric watches over me and my home since the last confrontation with William. I assured him I can take care of myself, but he insisted. We’ve known each other a long time and I trust him with my life.”

“I’m glad you have him. I want you to be careful, Gabe.” I have a bad feeling about William, but I know he can handle himself after the incident this morning.

Giving me a lopsided grin, he reaches across the table, rubbing his thumb across my knuckles. “I’m always careful.”

Rolling my eyes, his expression turns serious. “If you see him, tell me. If something doesn’t feel right, call me immediately. Do you understand?”

My eyes widen at his tone. I don’t think William has any interest in me. His remark about seeing me again was probably to irritate Gabe, but I’ll agree to this if it’ll make him feel better. “I understand.”

He closes his eyes, sighing deeply. “Thank you, baby.”

Standing from my chair, I grab our plates, placing them in the sink. Before I can turn around, his muscular arms wrap around my waist. His breath is warm against my cheek as he kisses me.

Spinning in his arms, I tilt my head, studying his handsome features. How can one man be so beautiful? He’s thoughtful, attentive, and incredible in bed. He’s already attuned to my mind and body.

“I hear you thinking. Care to share?” He grins, already sensing my thoughts.

“Stay out of my head.” Giving him a mock scowl, he laughs, pulling me into his chest.

“What do you want to do tonight?” Trailing his lips down my neck, goosebumps erupt across my skin.

“I’m not sure. W-what do you have in mind?” Closing my eyes, I lose myself in the warmth of his mouth.

“The fair is in town tonight. I thought we could go.”

My head snaps up and I stare at him. I haven’t been to a fair in years. After being holed up in my house so long, I feel comfortable enough with him to let loose and have a little fun. “Oh my God! Yes!”

Surprised by my outburst, he chuckles, hugging me tightly. “You’re even more gorgeous when you’re excited. Are you ready to go or do you need to stop by your house?”

“My dress is a little wrinkled. Do you mind if we stop by my place so I can change?”

“We still have about an hour before dark. Thefair doesn’t officially start until all the lights come on.” He kisses my temple before releasing me.

“Okay. I’m ready when you are.” I sing-song playfully. I can’t believe how excited I am.

He grabs his keys, locking up once we’re outside. We load in the truck, the air in the cab buzzing with good energy. Pulling onto the road, I sneak a glance at him, but his eyes catch mine.

“You know, the sound of your truck is really sexy.” I love the deep rumble. It exhibits power, just like him.

He grins, his hand gripping my thigh. “Is it now? A girl who likes dual exhaust pipes is the keeper of my heart.”

Smiling at him, I lay my hand on top of his, content in this moment.

The trip is quick and after pulling into my driveway, he parks the truck. “I’ll only be a few minutes. You can wait out here or come inside.”

“I’ll come with you.” Exiting the truck, I power walk to the porch, anticipation quickening my steps.

Just as I unlock the door, he grabs me by the waist, spinning me around before pinning me against the house. “Rule number one. You’ll never open your own fucking door when I’m around.”
